Thank you to everyone who posted here. I am taking Mom to Dresden for several days in late spring and was wondering where else to visit if this turns into a driving rather than rail trip.
The Harz mountains sound like an excellent option. In Goslar, we'd probably stay at the Ramada Hotel Baeren, as it has an elevator, parking and is pet-friendly (in case the cocker comes with us).

Highly recommended is this three-star hotel in Wernigerode:
www.hotel-am-anger.de
I know, it's slightly above your budget, but well worth it.
Well within your budget is this nice B&B:
pension-schweizer-hof.de
BTilke, why do you think the Dresden visit would turn into a driving rather than rail trip?

Ingo, because my husband may be working away from home over that period so we'd have nobody to take care of the dog. That means taking her with Mom and me--no big deal, we travel with her everywhere in continental Europe anyway. And if we were living full time in Brussels, we could feasibly still do it via rail...she's already ridden ICE and local trains in Germany. But we can't take her back to the UK via Eurostar so she has to be with us in the car going through Eurotunnel.
I'm fine with driving except for that snarky part going through the Koln-Essen-Duisberg-Dortmund-Wupper-Bochum- megalopolis. Especially as the autobahns in that area are controlled by Our Lady of Perpetual Construction.

Many thanks for your compassion.
I live and work right in the middle of the "Koln-Essen-Duisberg-Dortmund-Wupper-Bochum- megalopolis".
Better avoid this area between 7:00 and 9:00 and between 15:30 and 19:00!!!
(And IF you go, A2 is usually the best option; the A40 the worst)

Avoiding the rush hours, often does not help. The very hard construction works are on weekends and at night.
Listen to WDR2 or look here for congestions:

Ok, I understand completely. I would *hate* to drive there!
I was just concerned about your plans after arrival in Dresden; you don't need a car here.
Anyway, I hope you'll have an enjoyable trip.
