Harvest time in Burgundy?

As luck would have it....the dates we are currently scheduled in Burgundy (cote d'beaune area) are during the the Jazz a'Beaune festival and the locals anticipate that this will also be harvest time.

Does anyone have any experience traveling to this area during either of these two times (Jazz festival or harvest). I am concerned about the influx of visitors due to the festival and also what impact (if any) harvest may have on the wineries that we want to taste at.

Since I am planning a visit to Alsace as well.....I could switch the itinerary around and start in Burgundy and end in Alsace if I need to. That would require relying upon the TGV to get to CDG from Strasbourg instead of by car from Auxerre. My husband's concern is a potential strike and then missing our flight out of CDG. The theory being we have a bit more control with our own car. If we do this we will also miss the Saturday market in Beaune.

Would appreciate your thoughts and advice.

We stayed just outside of Beaune in St Romain from Sept 16 to Sept 31 in '06. All the vineyards around us were being harvested while we were there. Lots of wineries had end-of-harvest parties at their facilities in the evening as we drove past them on the way to dinner. When we took the TGV back to Paris, the train was loaded with grape pickers (purple fingers). We really didn't see any impact on the towns, sites, etc from the harvest. Didn't notice any jazz festival either.

We were in Burgundy in April and rented a gite about a 30 minute drive to Beaune. We did Saturday Market in Beaune and Sunday Market in Dijon. Both were nice of course Dijon's is bigger. Sorry I do not know about the Jazz Festival, I would imagine it is pretty popular. We loved having a car and driving around Burgundy.Saw some great sites if you want any recommendations and you do decide on a car. Loved Ma Cuisine in Beaune which I am sure you have heard about.

If you take a car, a GPS provides freedom to roam without fear of getting lost. When we were there (Oct. 2009) the cost to get one with the rental was huge so we brought our own, with a European chip purchased on eBay.

You can't predict the harvest accurately at this time, or even in a few months. Last year it was early, started first week in September and there can be a 3-4 week difference depending on weather.

You might e-mail John and Celine at [email protected] to ask about any disruptions from either harvest or the music fest. I'm sure they'd give you a straight answer.
