Jamin-
Not sure where you are in the world but the last issue of People Magazine (the one with Katie Couric on the cover) did a whole spread on the different castles and churches/cathedrals featured in Harry Potter. I think I threw my issue away but if I didn't, I'll be sure to get back to you with more specifics.

Many of them were spread out across England but the zoo (with the snake) and the train station (forget the name but the same as in the book) are in London. I think I threw my issue away but if I didn't, I'll be sure to get back to you with more specifics.

the snake scene is the lizard house at London Zoo, and the railway station is kings cross (if you go there you may also be interested to know that England's famous warrior queen Boadicia is buried under platform 8. Not a lot of people know that)

The opening scenes are shot in one of England most delightful towns - Bracknell, well worth a visit on your tour of the UK. Don't miss the wonderful shopping, the historic rail station, lots of fabulous friendly pubs and errr, nothing else.

There was actually very little fliming in London proper -- King's Cross, Australia House (interiors only, which the public can't get to), and the London Zoo were about it. When we went looking for these places last summer we were surprised to find NO wall of any type separating Platforms 9 and 10. Turns out that JKR misrembered and when she was writing, she was thinking of platforms at Euston Station. The movie used a wall at King's Cross between platforms 4 and 5, and the station is now all set up to show tourists everything.

In fact, the British Tourist Authority is getting ready for an onslaught (they hope) of Potter-oriented tourists. Here's a link to the special site and brochure they've put together with many of the sites that were used in the film, plus related places (on topics of owls, castles, etc.). (Don't count on actually receiving the printed brochure -- I sent for mine in November and it hasn't arrived yet.)

http://www.visitbritain.com/harry_potter/index1.htm

Well I looked at the BTA web site on locations and it tells you where to find steam trains and stuff, but not where they were filmed.

I found this on an unofficial web site

"Indoor shots of Hogwarts are at Gloucester Cathedral. Outdoor photography is at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, just south of the Enlgland-Scotland border
Studio shoots are in Leavsdoaen Studio in England, the same place where Star Wars and the James Bond movies have been filmed.
Privet Drive is being filmed on Picket Post Close road, outside of North Yorkshire."

And I undestand the viaduct bit is the Glenfinnan Viaduct west of Fort William
