Ground transportation advice needed

Hi. We will be in Italy for 2 weeks end of April/beginning of May. We fly into Naples and out of Florence. We will be staying in Positano, then Rome, then Siena, then Florence (for the last night before catching an early morning flight home). We plan to have a car for the time when we are in Siena.

I am trying to figure out the best way to organize our ground transportation for each leg. In particular, does it make sense to rent and return the car in Siena (and take the train from Rome to Siena and Siena to Florence), or should we pick it up in Rome and return it at the Florence airport (or something in between)? Also, we will be traveling from Positano to Siena on Liberation Day (national holiday). Need advice as to how you would organize all this transportation. Thanks!

<<should we pick it up in Rome and return it at the Florence airport>>

This is what I would do.

Best wishes,

Rex

Not sure about this (- maybe someone else can confirm) - but I would imagine the car hire agencies could be closed on June 2nd. So you might need to arrange car hire the day before (from Sorrento) - or the day after (from Siena).

I'm confused. What is June 2? Their trip is "end of April/beginning of May". And I am not sure what "Liberation Day" they mean, since neither April 25 ("La Liberazione" in Italy) nor May 8 ("V-E" Day, May 8, but primarily celebrated in France) seems to fit their description of dates and their itinerary.

Hi rex,

I think MAY 2 was meant. May day is on a Saturday this year.

Thanks for the responses so far. We are traveling on April 25 from Positano to Rome. I am concerned about transport on that day since it is a holday.

You can find train timetables for April 25th on:
www.trenitalia.it

It will be busy so ... book early.

Steve

P.S. Sorry - forget the June 2nd reference in my previous post. My mistake
