Grossglockner Road Without a Car

Hi,

We will be in the Salzburg area this September and are really really interested in taking a day trip to visit the Grossglockner road and the national park. However, we will not have a car (and renting one is not an option) - and everything I have seen so far only talks about driving the road yourself.

I am wondering if anyone can suggest an alternative way to tour this area - are there any public buses we can take, or is there any organized tour we can take ? We found one tour that was charging around Euro160 per person and thats way out of our budget.

Any tips for how we can do this without a car ?

Thanks much in advance !

Check with some of the local private bus companies and travel bureaus. You will find that on almost any given day there is a bus tour going to the Grossglockner. It will be mostly Austrians and Germans on the bus, and don't expect an English commentary.

I'm just making a guess, but would the Austrian post-bus run here? Maybe someone else knows their official website?

I am sorry, I should have mentioned that that you will have to find these bus operators and tour offices once you are in Salzburg. Quite often, these places have posters outside of their offices listing when and where they will be going. Also, check with the Salzburg Tourist bureau. They can at least refer you to a bus company or private tour office. They speak English at the tourist bureau.
