Well I'm not sure... and ours wasn't a typical trip - I had organised a small GTG of fellow members of a digital photography hobby site.
We met at 12.30 for lunch in a pub and then started walking around, stopping often to take pics.
It was VERY cold and exceptionally bright - so bright it made my eyes water. Mostly it was sunny but we did have some showers, a stunning double rainbow and a hailstone shower.
We only walked around the Cutty Sark, Naval College (including inside the chapel) and the Observatory but we didn't go into any museums nor take time in the markets or shops (which I would have done if we weren't in that group).
We were there about 4 hours total...

We went a few years back and took the Docklands Light Railway and walked through a tunnel under the Thames. That was an experience in itself. We also had tea at the tea room near the naval observatory and went to a number of indoor flea markets. We really enjoyed ourselves.

Hmm, now I'm a little concerned about the weather. I plan to layer and also wear my leather jacket, a scarf and gloves. However, I am from Hawaii, so I'm not used to extremely cold temps. I wonder if I should bring my extra thick coat--the one I call my "Eskimo Coat"?

Be sure to get an early start. I loved Greenwich - took the boat in early April. My only regret is that we had so little time there. If I'd realized how interesting it would be, I'd have taken the first trip in the AM or found a faster way to travel. I believe the Observatory closed at 5PM or so.

I thought I should report back....just went there 3 weeks ago and although the weather was overcast and chilly, overall it was a nice day. I can see what you mean when you say that it is a great place during the summer, but I found Greenwich to be charming all the same.
I took a London Walks Tour to Greenwich, which really helped. If you have kids, Greenwich is an ideal excursion! (Well, it's a great excursion even if you don't have kids.) There is all this open space for running around, and they seem to have geared many of the attractions to be extremely educational. There are a lot of things to learn about Greenwich in one day, so you can guarantee your kids will come away with at least a few factoids! Also there are exhibits on the nautical significance of the area, as well as exhibits on time and maps.
I brought home some souvenirs from Greenwich for my niece and she thought they were SO cool.
The other thing I liked about Greenwich was, it was a nice escape from the hustle & bustle of the city. The boat ride over was quite nice and relaxing. On the train ride back I stopped at the busy Canary Wharf station for some shopping, which helped get me back into busy mode.
Thanks flanneruk for all of your suggestions!

yes, and you can do it in a half day if you plan it right. see the meridian line, observatory, naval museum and cutty sark and you are done. You can knock that out and be back in london by 2 or 3 if you dont waste time. You would be better served to do a day trip to stonehenge and salisbury. You will enjoy that more. by the way, the hike up the hill to the observatory is not easy unless you are in pretty good shape.
