greek islands

i am a novice traveler...this june a friend and i are planning to travel from spain to greece...i want to make the most of greece..ideally i was thinking of or taking a ferry from bari to patras, training it to athens and then getting to the local port and hitting mykonos for two days, ios for 2 nights, santorini for three nights, then heading back to athens, where we will spend our last two days (we fly out of athens)..i am however hoping this will work out...i would love to have an idea of how long it will take to travel btw each island starting from piraeus to mykonos...i would really appreciate any feedback/advice regarding this tenative plan including the amt of time we have alotted on each island..we will be in greece from approx june 22nd to july 2nd...tell me what you think...thanks k

I can tell you, for sure, that the ferry between Santorini and Mykonos will take approx 2 and 1/2 hours by fast ferry - Flyingcat. Visit www.hellenicseaways.gr for all island ferry schedules and prices. Have a great trip!

The catamarans or high speed ferries are double the cost but take half the time. You can cut time even more by possibly taking a catamaran from the port of Rafina to Mykonos instead of Pireaus. It is however easier to get to Pireaus as the metro goes right to the port whereas the last time I was there I had to take a combination bus and metro from Rafina.

If you really want to make the most of Greece, it doesn't seem to make sense spending 18 hours on a ferry just to get from Bari to Patra. You'd be by-passing a whole group of beautiful islands - i.e. the Ionians. Why not break the journey with a stop over in Corfu? It's completely different from Mykonos and Santorini and well worth a day or two.
