The north end of Santorini is one of our favorite places in all the world. The eastern half of Crete is also wonderful, but we didn't enjoy Corfu (too touristy).

We had a wonderful trip on Zeus Cruises last Sept. We were sceduled to see about 6 islands in the Cycliades but the winds prevented us from making it that far south. We ended up cruising (in a small 30 passenger boat) to the Agro-Saronic Islands and 2 ports on the Pelopenese penninsula. Our over all fovorite was Nafplion. A lovely town with a picturesque harbor with a huge Venetian fortress high on an overlooking mountain, plenty of freindly tavernas and a lively town square with lots of good shopping bargains and antiques. We also arranged a bus trip to the Byzantine city of Mystras and had lunch in a shaded taverna in Sparti. Both the fortress and Mystras required a fairly strenuous walk up the mountain, but worth it. All in all, Nafplion seemed to more of a haven for the Greeks, rather than the typical tourist stop. Our other favorites were Idra(Hydra) a working fishing town with no cars and millions of cats and Poros (not Paros), small but much as we imagined some of the Cycliades to be with its white washed houses, winding alley ways and brightly colored doors, often surrounded with bouganvillia and potted floweres. We were pleased at the total serendipity of the north winds. We may not have ever seen these towns and islands, otherwise.

During a 3 day stopover in Greece we took the ship "Aegean Glory" on a day trip to the islands of
(1) Poros---nice village and shopping area (2) Hydra where one can climb a hill and have a picturesque view of island--no cars allowed on this island, lots of donkeys...(3)Aegina where we enjoyed renting mopeds and buzzing around the island. Of course these were the "smaller" isles compared to Santorini, etc but were enjoyable for the short time we had in Athens!

MY WIFE AND I HONEYMOONED ON THE ISLAND OF SANTORINI... ABOUT TEN YEARS AGO. SINCE THEN WE'VE TRAVELED MUCH OF THE WORLD TOGETHER -- THROUGHOUT EUROPE, ASIA, THE SOUTH PACIFIC AND THE AMERICAS... WE HAVE YET TO FIND ANYTHING LIKE SANTORINI.
THIS IS A MOST REMARKABLE PLACE. WE'LL RETURN NEXT YEAR. I'VE BEEN A LITTLE CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT I'VE READ ABOUT THE COMMERCIALIZATION OF THE PLACE IN THE LAST DECADE... BUT VISUALLY I'VE SEEN NOTHING LIKE IT IN THE WORLD.
SEVEN MILES LONG... MAYBE A COUPLE MILES WIDE AT THE MOST. RED ROCK CLIFFS ON THE WEST... AND TAPPERED BLACK SAND BEACHES ON THE EAST.
THE BUILDINGS ARE ALL WHITE... MANY WITH BLUE DOMES... HOTELS BUILT RIGHT INTO THE BLUFF FACING THE SEA.
THERE'S AKROTIRI [SP?] -- ANCIENT CITY BEING UNEARTHED AT THE SOUTHERN TIP OF THE ISLAND... YOU CAN TRAVEL BY BOAT TO OTHER ISLANDS NEARBY. IT'S THE MOST REMARKABLE PLACE WE'VE EVER BEEN.
