I stayed at the Astor September '02.
It's location is very good, only 1 minute from Syntagma. If you ask for a room facing the Acropolis on an upper level the view is very very cool.
The hotel has a rooftop breakfast room/restaurant although when I used the restaurant two evenings I was the only customer.
The reception area is very nice and the staff friendly. Although the bedroom was OK size and very clean it was a little tired (I think that is the word), same as the corridors on each floor.

another good hotel review site by other travellers is:
www.holidaysuncovered.co.uk
- this site covers hundreds of European hotels. I was warned of a bad hotel on here by reading the reviews and I think I was lucky!

Astor in Athens is not among the renovated hotels for the Olympics,...for the same price you can get an added value in fully renovated fresh hotels. If you are travelling with kids why not staying somewhere on the Athens riviera(Faliron, glyfada, vouliagmeni) to take full advantage of the beach/tavernas etc...
Daedalus is totally unknown, hope it is not a tourist trap.
Mediterranean is excellent as a city hotel.
if you need family rooms and want to be on the best beach of the island(faliraki), try the Grecotel or the Palladium

mzani, thank you for your candour, the daedelus hotel is totally unknown to me, can't find a review anywhere ?! Which either means its new ....or not so good, but usually people are quite willing to whinge about poor places.

My husband and I just returned from Greece. We stayed 1 nite at Astor Hotel, May 24, 2003. Pd 115 euros. Lobby, reception area and rooftop restaurant were very nice. I don't think the room was renovated, but it was roomy and bath was roomy.(important to us). We would definitely stay again. Close to Plaka area, Parliment(changing of the Guards), Benaki musuem. Staff very helpful! Have taverna recomendation: Byzantino @ 18 Kidathineon Str. Plaka
Can't believe we we're at these places last Sunday. Enjoy......Mary
