santorini has a great bus service

cheap too
will take you all over
the island although the less popular areas might have a bit of a wait for a bus so with little one you might be better off with a car - one of those little jeep- looking things

you will love the food in greece
big generous servings and enough olives to make anyone happy!

get ready for the coffee - greek style!
you can trace your initials in the bottom of the cup lol

Finally got confirmation from Glaros in Naxos.
We have used public transporation on most of our trips, our little one also loves to hop on Buses and trains, so far we haven't considered rental cars...but may have to this time.
About food though, we are vegetarian so I guess will have to stick to the appetizers/mezzes & olives and skip the main course

Depends on what you consider main courses ... there are tons of main course dishes that are stuffed vegetables -- peppers, eggplant, tomatoes. However u can also order them as side dishes. Lots more veggies choices in Greece than in many other European countries. Also, many Islands and Athens have veg. restaurants too.

Jan is right. There are all kinds of Veggie options.
The Greek salads are huge and can easily feed two. If feta cheese is not on your menu then remember a tomato salad or a village salad is a Greek salad without the feta.
There are all kinds of eggplant dishes as appetizers and mains and the stuffed peppers and tomatoes are really good. Delmondes, stuffed olive leaves are also popular as are cooked greens.
Enjoy

Judging from the title of this post, I would say feta is definitely on your menu. ;-)

Greek tavernas serve family style, where several starters may be ordered and shared around the table. That's why Greek salad and other starters are so huge - they are meant for more than one person. Not only are there many vegetable dishes available in Greece, they are made from the freshest of ingredients, ripened in the Greek sun, and picked the day they are served.

I never order off the menu in Greek tavernas. In most, you are welcome to walk into the kitchen to see what has been prepared for that day. If not, there will be a display case from which to choose. Ask questions - they will be happy to explain what the dishes contain. You will end up trying many more foods than you ever imagined.

I agree with lanejohan than you should hire a car on Santorini but a proper sedan might be better with your little child. It's just my preference but I think that would be safer than a jeep. There is lots to explore - two great beach towns on the other side of the island. And other little spots to explore as well.

There are a couple of car hire places in Fira. In 2006 I think it cost us about 30 euros to hire a car for a day.

Don't be too worried about the Acropolis museum; as brotherleelove says, there is plenty to see at the National Archaeological Museum, especially the sculpture collection.

I hope you love Greece, we think it is fantastic.

OMG...reading about greek food I can't wait to be there... may have to go walk to the neighbourhood greek restaurant for lunch I'm so much looking forward to the food now. On other threads someone had commented about the food ingredients begin extremely fresh in Greece. Also heard about the sundried tomato patties in Santorini. Feta not too high on my list, although mild works.

Stanbr, we have made reservations in the Glaros Studios, which is not exactly on the beach...is the hotel location better than the sudios?? How about the view?

Hotel Glaros is about 10 meters from the beach and each room has an ocean view from a tiny balcony. It is where we stayed on our first 4 trips to Greece.
Here are our pictures.

Glaros Studios are about 500 meters from the hotel located in a residential neighborhood. It is about 250 meters from the beach with no ocean view.
We have stayed at the studios on our past two long stay trips ( two weeks weeks each time) We wanted to get the feel of living in a Greek neighborhood. We wanted to be integrated with the people and do daily marketing and cook Breakfast and lunch. My wife put her foot down on cooking dinner though.

I have been following other people trying to book Hotel Glaros on other forums and I really doubt that you will be able to get a booking there in late may or early June as the hotel appears to be full.
I was planning on meeting my friends with a family of 7 booked into three rooms at the studios in early June however I had to cancel our trip. When are you going to be there? Perhaps you got our room. It is a two level maisonette with a loft bedroom. It has two balconies and a third patio just outside the front door. We think they are the best rooms in the Studios.

just a last word on Greek food.
The tomatoes in a Greek salad are so sweet they taste almost like candy. Perhaps I exaggerate however after hothouse tomatoes all winter long that how I remember every Greek salad in Naxos.

Thanks Stanbr, we are getting the studio. In fact Alex, the manager/owner was very kind and patient he had kept both on hold for us and we finally decided on the studio.
