Greece trip??

Which islands would be nice for two older ladies(60s). We are not interested in nightlife but would like a beautiful beach and some charming village. Is it safe to travel alone or would we be better doing a tour? Thanks,

I think that Greece is an easy country for travel, and I wouldn't recommend a tour. It's very easy to travel independently. I recommend Naxos - the beaches are very nice, there's lots of history, prices are reasonable. Rhodes is also interesting - the old walled city is quite incredible. We didn't spend any time on the beach there, so can't say what their beaches are like. There are flights to both those islands from Athens.

Were you thinking of 1 island or a few islands? I know lots of people recommend Santorini - it wasn't my favourite, although I was glad I saw it.

Lots of regulars from this forum have been to Greece - I'm sure you'll get lots more opinions!

Hi There,
There is an excellent resource on the web for Greek travel, www.greektravel.com which has an alphabetical listing of all the islands.
The only thing I would caution against is renting a car and driving in Greece, the roads are not very clearly marked and even for my experienced, hard core husband it got so bad we decided against it.
Otherwise, if you have no intentions to see the mainland, ferries go back and forth between the islands or Olympic airways flights are much less expensive then you would expect, we took 3 flights and for the two of us it was only $300.00 for everything, NOT per person.
I loved Santorini, but Naxos is highly recommended.
We ended up chartering a yacht and going to all of the islands in the Saronic gulf which was just lovely, an island you might really enjoy is Hydra, which is truly charming.
Email me directly if I can be of more help.

Mary Ann

My experience is limited to Crete, which I like very much. I'm sure you'd find places to suit you there.

I'm inclined to recommend Paleohora, which is in south east Crete; you might like to look at Loutro as well. There is a very good web site at www.explorecrete.com, which you might care to have a look at

Go to Syros island.
The Ermoupoli town on Syros, is the capital of the Cyclades group of islands, and it is very beautiful. It is a quiet town, with beautiful neoclassical houses, with sofisticated nightlife (including a casino), and a great place to see orthodox and catholics christians living together.

I am surprised this beautiful city is never mentioned in this forum. I suggest you go and discover it. It is defenately a great place to be!

I recommend a visit to Skiathos in the northern Aegean. Most of the beaches in the Greek islands are not sandy, but there is a sandy beach in Skiathos. Also, the tavernas are wonderful. it has been a popular destination for Brits for quite a long time, so you won't have any trouble with the languaage. Take the ferry from Volos (3 hours) or Evia (6 hrs).
