Great places to visit between Rome and Pisa!

Hi - I am flying into Rome and out of Pisa - any suggestions for towns to visit for maybe two or three days? (If they are a little out of the way - that's alright, so long as they are accessible via public transportation.) We would like to stay in the center of a small town. Should we search the Umbria region or Tuscany? Also, we would like to visit some vineyars if possible - are there perhaps day tours, where you can hire a driver to some of the vineyards? (as, we will not have a car)- Thanks!

Hi Cara - Well - you're spoilt for choice in Umbria or Tuscany.

Orvieto? Cortona? Assisi? Siena? Perugia, Spoleto, Lucca ... the list is endless.

For a private vineyards trip - depending on where you're staying - Luca Garappa and Alessandro Camilli get good reviews:

Hope this helps ...

Thanks Steve, Those sites look great!

With regard to our itinerary - do you have a particular favorite base in Tuscany or Umbria? (I am back and forth on renting a car) Perhaps it would be best. Ideally, it may be best if we could train out from Rome to a more managable town in Tuscany or Umbria - then rent a car from there. Orvieto?
