Great lunch spot near Vatican

We have 9am reservations for Scavi excavation tour, then 1pm reservations for Scala Reale Vatican Museum tour.

Do you know a great place for a leisurely lunch between the two tours?

We've had many satisfactory meals near the Vatican/St. Peter's, but none super enough to stand out and cause us to make a note. If you get no extra-special suggestions it's only a matter of minutes (especially by cab) back to the Vatican Museums from the main part of the city. If you've got a restaurant you want to try there, don't feel yourself locked in to the left bank.

By the way, a leisurely lunch as preamble to a 1pm appointment may be a problem. Most restaurants in Rome don't open until Noon or 12:30, some 1pm! Your first criteria may be to find one that opens early enough to give you time to eat at all.

Bars and sandwich shops are open all day, so there's no reason to go hungry, though it may be a day for no gourmet lunch!

Ed

The Vatican has a really great cafeteria on site. You will not believe your choices, beef, salads, hot and cold choices and very reasonable.

If you run out of time this is a good option.

da Roberto is an excellent restaurant and not too expensive. I don't know the street name, but it's on the same street as the Hotel Santa Anna. very very close to the Vatican. i don't know that it's open between 11 and 1, though. incidentally, i've been on the Scavi tour, very interesting. The only thing they won't show is the bones.
