I have used my Garmin 6 or 7 times in Europe (GPS contains both USA and Europe maps) with good results. I chose Garmin becauses my other GPSs are Garmin and I know their methodology. Having said that, I have heard that Garmin is better in US and TomTom better in Europe. Have a friend that researched (engineering PhD) and he went with TomTom for Europe. I don't think you would go wrong with either.

I have a Garmin and it works fine. I have not done much driving but its great for walking around except in Venice, Where for some reason it totally ignores the vaporetto and will take you all around the block walking from point A to B when you can simply hop on the vaporetto and be there in 5 min. It also has a problem with the address function but then addresses are sometimes a little kooky anyway IMHO.

We've been using a Garmin all over Europe and it works great. It does sometime have problems with finding building numbers on certain streets but that seems to be more an issue with inconsistent building numbering on the town's part.
