Good Restaurants in Grindelwald?

Hello--

Does anyone have good suggestions for places to dine in Grindenwald. Also, is anyone for or against the Half-board plans that most hotels offer? We will be in town for 5 days.

Thanks!
Tina: Have not been in Grindelwald for a while, but as far as I remember the "Spinne" is quite good. If you really want to see some locals go to the "Steinbock" for a glass of wine or a beer. A really famous institution.
Half-board, in general, is always a good deal. In better hotels, you will have a salad buffet to start with and up to three different main courses to choose from. When we go on ski holidays, it's always the best to have half-board, because for lunch, we only have a small snack.

I do not like half-pension, generally even if the restaurant is great unless I'm only staying one night. Eating out is half the joy of traveling, so I like variety. Grindlewald is not exactly a culinary haven. We still laugh at the night we went to a highly recommended restaurant in town (the Wolter Hotel?)and asked to see the wine list. The waiter said there was no list -- but they had two whites and two reds. We asked for the "better" of the two reds, which he brought out and proceeded to unscrew the cap. The looks on all our faces would have made a great picture.
We stay at the Alpina and the food is really very good there. A lot of other people come there for the fondue Chinoise -- the meat in broth fondue with huge platters of accompaniments.
One other night we had fresh trout from the tank they keep just outside the entrance. The owner/chef is very good and the fish was wonderful.
I have eaten at several other places in town, but none so memorable that I even bothered to write them down. I think the better hotels are as good a choice as anywhere.

We've only gone to Grindelwald for skiing, in which case we like the half-board system (in our case at the Hotel Eiger) because we're too wiped out at the end of the day to care about searching out a different place to eat. Otherwise, I'd be inclined to agree with Patrick that dining around is part of the fun of the trip. The restaurant at the Eiger, which is also open to the public, is reasonably good and probably worth a try if you're going to be there 5 days.

We stayed at the Gletschergarten and enjoyed the meals (half-board plan)& the wine. We ate one meal(I think it was lunch) at the Hotel Fiescherblick and it was good. Since this is an alpine village, I wasn't expecting anything like the elegant restaurants of Paris.

Just back from Grindelwald. We stayed at the Parkhotel Schoenegg on a half board plan and everything was outstanding. I expect it to be like this at almost every other hotel in the village as well.
Tina, you lucky girl: looks like you're up to some more snowfall...
