Rosy, I can recommend a hotel in Salzburg from our trip last November. Hotel Amadeus (http://www.hotelamadeus.at/englisch/index.html), which cost approx US$70.00 for a double at that time. This price included a nice breakfast buffet. Our room was large, clean and had a private bath. The staff was very nice and we liked the quiet, but convenient, location.

I visited southern Czech Rep. and Austria in 1997. I thought the places that I stayed in both Prague and Salzburg were good values, though they were very different- the one in Salzburg was at the top of my price range and the one in Prague was very cheap (app. $40 per night for a double with bath; be sure and ask for room with bath). In Prague I stayed at the Hotel Balkan, left bank, Andel tube stop. This hotel is NOT in the old center, but the subway system is very good. You may want to spend the money to stay in the old center. This place was basic but clean. Phone number I have is 42 2 540 777.

The place I stayed in in Salzburg, was a splurge. Their website
is http://www.salzburg.tourismus.net/go...nte/index.html

I loved this place-- great location, character and great buffet breakfast.

When I travel I know what I can average spending per night, so if I spend more than I want one place, I make it up at another. For a double the hotel in Salzburg was $90+, but the dollar is so very much stronger now I think it is within your price range.

Prices vary a lot depending on season. You didn't say when your trip is. My trip was in early-mid May.

Also, as you probably know Austria is much more expensive than Czech Rep., but old town Prague was very pricey in '97 though I'm sure there are bargains there, especially off season.

Several years ago I stayed at Pension Seibel in Munich. Our room was cramped-- small room and big furniture, but rooms were clean and location was great. The site is:
http://www.carsandhotels.com/hotels/...on_auxbyr.html

Hope this is helpful and that you will enjoy Munich as much as I did.

Rosy:

In Vienna, I highly recommend the Hotel Ibis Wien Messe. I stayed there for 2 nights last month (room had 1 double bed), and the total was $109! It's a very clean, modern, western-style hotel. It's close to the S-Bahn, as well. I don't know about the other cities, but based on my experience with this hotel, I would definitely consider using Ibis Hotels in the future. They don't have frills, or a grand history, but if you're looking for a comfortable, clean & modern hotel room, Ibis is a good bet. You can book online at www.accor.com.

I've also had good luck with Best Western Hotels in Italy, so I'd also look at them, as well.

Good luck!

The Pension Seibel is a good choice in Munich, we liked the location close to the Marienplatz. We paid 159 DM in 1999, very nice included breakfast. http://www.inmuenchen.de/Hotel/Pension/Seibel/

The Goldene Ente in Salzburg is a nice family run hotel with a good restaurant. A huge breakfast was included with our room (1180 AS). http://www.salzburg.tourismus.net/go...nte/index.html

In Vienna, we stayed at the Altwienerhof, the rooms were an excellent value and the breakfast was excellent. Do a search here for more information. I think we paid around 1000 AS.

In Prague we stayed at the Pension Unitas. Very basic accommodations with toilet and shower down the hall. We paid around $35 for a double in 1999. http://www.cloister-inn.cz/unitas/

We stayed at the Hotel La Madeleine in Brussels this September. Great location between the Central Station and La Grand Place. Great staff and nice included breakfast, we had a huge room for 3700 BF. http://www.proximedia.com/web/adornes.html

In Amsterdam we stayed at the Owl Hotel which was a short walk from the Leidesplein.
