Good budget restaurants in Madrid
Any suggestions for good budget restaurants in Madrid. I am looking for a couple of sit down authentic restaurants that have decent pricing. Of course I will try tapas while there but would like your suggestions on good budget restaurants. Thanks!

We were sorry we missed some of Maribel's recommended places, specifically Finca de Susana (or the sister place) also we had hoped to get to Casa Mingo for the chicken but missed that too. Both of those are budget & have good reviews.
We stayed in the area of the royal palace & there were stand up signs in the street with the menu posted. One was the small Casa Vergara near the Hotel Opera about E15 pp and pretty good (not gourmet but a full meal with salad, entree & desert plus a choice of bottled water or glass of wine. We ordered the glass of wine but they included a full bottle for the price for the 2 of us which surprised us. They had great pastries...
Even better, slightly bit higher but still in that price range we lunched in the outdoor patio of Taberna del Alabardero which was very good too for the set menu & had the best ice cream. I was trying to find the web site but only found this at least it has a map http://www.mesalibre.com/ficha/resta...abardero154810.
I even ate one at Corte Ingles for lunch once upon a time.
I prefer these places that have a set menu to a la carte unless it's tapas we want. A la carte in restaurantes quickly gets pricey & the set menus to be the best deals.
One day we ate at this little casual place that turned out to have the best fried potatoes served with eggs it's not far from Sol I will look for that name for you I cna't seem to locate it right now.
My endless trip report rambling I hope to edit it soon & post it again but the uncut version is this

I cut & pasted this & saved some time ago & have forgotten it's origin so I can't vouch for the accuracy of these prices perhaps someone here can comment on these for Harry?

"Kalas a small, New York-style restaurant, tucked away on a sidestreet near the opera house and the royal palace. A popular spot for brunch on Sundays, it is also a good choice if you just want a salad for lunch. The fixed-price menu is good value at £6, dinner about £12. Calle Amnistia 6 (91 559 17 55). " (????!!! Prices ??)
"La Bola has been run by the same family since it opened in 1802. This most traditional of restaurants specialises in Madrid's signature dish, cocido madrileño. Not for the faint-hearted, this is strictly a lunch-only affair, as it is considered too heavy for dinner. Served in blackened earthenware pots, this elaborate stew takes a good six hours to make and involves pork, beef, pig's trotters, chickpeas, potatoes, dumplings and about a dozen other ingredients. It is usually eaten in stages: first the broth, then the vegetables and finally the meat. About £15 a head. Calle Bola 5 (91 547 69 30)."
"Casa Marta is friendly, family-run and unpretentious. Antonio, the owner, will help you choose from a menu of traditional Madrid dishes. About £10 a head for three courses, wine and coffee. Calle Santa Clara 10 (91 548 28 25)."
"La Atrevida is worth seeking out for its original tapas and wide range of Spanish wines. Specials are chalked up on a board, and you can either sit on a stool in the bar or make yourself comfortable at a table in the back. Everything is made on the premises, apart from the terrific range of cheeses, sausages and hams. It would be difficult to spend more than £10 each. Calle Santiago 10 (91 559 64 22)."

amsdon,
Thank you for your response. We are planning on two gourmet meals during our trip but will be on a limited budget for most of the time. I did read Maribels' guide and took some suggestions from there mainly for our trip to Segovia. Thanks again for your suggestions.
