Going to Scandinavia and looking for HELP!
Dear Travelers.
My wife and I are planing a car trip around Northern Europe at the end of September.
We want to rent a car in Munich and then drive up north to Copenhagen.
We’ll stay there for a couple of days, and then we’ll proceed to Sweden to the Malme area.
Next, we will go to Stockholm, where we we''ll stay for a couple of days.
From Stockholm our trip runs around Norway, to Bergen and fjords.
For Bergen and its sites we’ll devote a few days and then drive to Oslo.
From Oslo, by the night ferryboat, we will cross to Denmark(Frederikshavn)
and drive to Amsterdam, from which we intend return to Munich.
On the voyage from Copenhagen to Oslo we are planning to spend about two weeks.
This is the brief description of our trip.
And here are my questions:
1. Which route do you recommend from Stockholm to Bergen?
I thought about the following one:
Stockholm, Vasteras, Orebro, Karlstadt, ???, Klofta, Hammar, Vinstra,
Lom, Nordfjordeid, Byrkjelo, Forde, ???, Bergen.
There are some problems here: I don’t know how does the ferry via
fjords work and this is my second question.
2. Is it possible to pass the car by ferry across the fjords? If yes,
how often do these ferries sail? What are the prices?
3. How often do the night ferrys Oslo - Frederikshavn (Denmark) ply?
Are ticket reservations essential or is it possible to purchase them there?
What are the prices?
4. Do you recommend to reserve rooms / hotels / motels in advance, at
this time of year?
5. Which other interesting sites in Scandinavia do you recommend visiting?
May be it would be better to change our route?
These are the main questions, that I wanted to ask you. I might have forgotten something.
Thank you in advance.
Dmitry & Elena

Hi - have just returned from Denmark and Norway (hotel info posted earlier). You don't mention how long your trip is, BUT you've got a whole lot packed in there with LOTS of driving so hopefully this is more than a l0 day or so trip. We had a different route so I can't advise you about that but I do advise you to try to make advance hotel reservations especially in Oslo and Bergen. Bergen had rainy chilly weather when we were there week and a half ago, and probably will be same (as well as rest of Scandinavia) when you go so bring appropriate clothing. We took the express boat from Skagen to Larvik which was HUGE but full, and made reservations night before and then upgraded to first class. So when you decide what you're going to do, try to make the reservasions in advance. Maybe Sept won't be as busy though. For as bad as the weather was, there were still tourists all over.

Hi!
I'm from Copenhagen (Denmark), and maybe I can help you a bit.
I believe the ferry from Frederikshavn leaves once a day, but there's a long way from Copenhagen to Frederikshavn. You could also take a ferry om Copenhagen to Oslo (Leaves at 5 in the evening and arrives at Oslo at 9 next morning). Here you need reservations.
You don't have to worry about too many tourist at the end of september. All schools have started and people are back to work at that time.
Feel free to e-mail me, if you have other Q. about Denmark - maybe I can help.
Anyway have a nice trip!
The ferries along the fjords did not require advanced reservations even in July. Be sure to stopin Dale Norway at the Dale Fabrikutsalg ( factory outlet) great prices on sweaters! We also took a guided tour of a glacier at Briksdalbreen. We stayed right at the hotel at the glacier. The hotel is very small but just opened a new wing which is very modern. The restaurant was great! I recommend both. Email me and I'll look for the exact nbame and town on my credit card receipt. Also be aware the roads are not high speed roads. They wind around the fjords and are mostly one lane. Going from point A to point B takes a very long time if you are used to high speed driving as we are here in eastern PA, USA. Have fun.
