"Does this make them a better deal than an ATM card from a credit union? "

Nope. "No fee" doesn't mean free or even a good deal. The fee is built into the adverse exchange rate you get w/ the TC's.

Suggestion: Build a spread sheet showing money systems available to you. Work out costs per transaction. Deal with your bank or card companies for real/actual numbers. Find out how to access each source in the country you plan to visit. Inquire at your insurance agency about travel insurance options. The real cost of international travel is not currency conversion costs but housing. Imagine a week in a hotel for $100 a night versus $200 a night! On another spread sheet detail such expenses. I have also learned that a detailed reading of any guide book will get me all the information I need to make sensible travel decisions.

janis is correct, as usual. Those TC's aren't NO FEE, the fee's built in, and it sucks. Plus, you're stuck with cashing them during the hours the Post Offices are open (they take a nice siesta in the middle of the day in many places), and yes, there are lines, often long ones.

Just bag the idea of TCs - there's no way to make them useful or cost-effective.

I forgot to add that the fee at Visa/citi is 3% versus 1% for a MasterCard debit/ FMA card. A meaningful difference.

All what the people has been saying about traveller checks applies to traveller checks in Euros. I can't believe anyone was thinking on dollars, I don't even think they would change them here in Europe unless on a VERY VERY bad rate.

Not only a bad idea, it's worse.

1) you'll have to pay a fee to convert $ to TC in euros
2) only major banks or big hotels in europe are willing to take them. Most smaller establishments won't
3) any unused euro TCs you'll have to pay a fee to convert back to US$
