Cross-country rail via Bristol probably about 6-7 hours; via London probably about 8 and more frequent but also more expensive and have to cross London.

Jennyn3,
Sorry - can't give you any real practical advice as I have never made the journey but I can direct you to a couple of websites which will help.
Firstly, you will find train information here (look for the "journey planner" section towards the left of the page);
http://www.firstgroup.com/scotrail/index.php
Bus details can be found here (note that you will need to click on the "add more destinations" link to get Bath on to the menu;
http://www.nationalexpress.com/
It looks as though the train journey takes around 5/6 hours whilst the bus can take twice as long so I guess the train would be the better option.
One further note - did you know that you can fly direct to Bristol from Glasgow with easyJet? Have a look at www.easyjet.com. I don't know that part of the country at all, but I would imagine it would be pretty easy to get from Bristol to Bath. I'd guess that would be much a quicker option than going by rail or road.

You can also fly with British Airways between Glasgow and Bristol (about 1 hour)- their fares can be surprisingly cheap. You can then catch the bus into Bristol city from outside the terminal. The bus stops at Temple Meads station and it's only about a 15 minute journey from there to Bath

As others have mentioned, Flight between Glasgow and Bristol and another one from Glasgow to Southampton on "Fly Me" Departs 9:00, arrives Southampton 10:30 then bus then train to Bath, arriving 12:31.
If by train you could take the Virgin train at either 7:50 or 10:10 to Bristol arriving either 1:41 or 3:41. then either the Great Western to Bath by 2:11 or the later South Western at 4:03. If it were me I would take the train. I might just do it anyway for the fun of it on my next trip.
