I disagree-most of the answers to Millies question were from women and sincere. The couple that were not helpful were from anonymous posters, men or women? and one not so nice, whatever sex it was...this is just an attempt to turn this into another thread that disintigrates into nastiness~Sniper alert!

The reason men do not propose to women in serious relationships is that they do not wish to be married at all. Or they think it is too soon. Or they do not wish to marry the woman of the moment.

Millie, do you really wish to find out what's behind door number 1?

The reason people post remarks that might be hurtful to others (Millie, ignore it, and I don't believe you need to be told this, your confidence shines) is in an effort to rid thmeselves of toxins by putting their own bad feelings into someone else.

Let us know if it works.

I should think there's bound to be a restaurant or bistro in Montmartre that would have the view you want, if not the food...something up near Sacre Coeur, perhaps. Any Fodorites more familiar w/Montmartre could probably help w/specific recommendations. P.S. If you find what you want, and the guy says no, please inform me.

Oh for heaven's sakes. Leave the woman alone! All she did was ask for restaurant recommendations, and it's turned into a discussion of how wrong she might be for daring to propose in the first place.

Millie: Yes, the name of the restaurant is Georges. I watched a rainstorm sweep over Paris there last spring and was struck by the exquisite location.

Wherever you go, I feel that you and your beau will find happiness.

Just a thought, but when a proposal is done the traditional way (man asking woman), isn't it the woman who actually has control -- to say yes or no?

Millie, just prepared if your beau doesn't answer yes. Being at the top of the Eiffel Tower could then become dangerous to his health.

While it's probably extremely rare for the woman to ask the man, why not do it? Many men are scared to death of the idea of marriage and only do it because they feel that they do want a family and that time is running out. I think it's safe to say that many men would really prefer to remain single all their lives, as long as they could have all the benefits of marriage with a woman. Am I right?

I don't understand your question at all. Why would a women want to get married either if there were no benefits?

Assuming that the primary reason to get married is to have children, I would say that most men want children just as much as women but maybe not at as early an age.

By the way, my wife proposed to me. This was after we had decided mutually that we wanted to marry at some time in the future. She told me that she wasn't ready at the time so I didn't push it. When she was ready she asked me. It was great.

Sorry I don't have any restaurant suggestions. Anywhere you do it will instantly become the most romantic place in the world anyway. He won't be looking at the Eiffel Tower.

your name is an old film starring Julie Andrews.

In montmarte, on PLACE DU TERTRE, there is a restaurant named PATACHOU and dining on their terrace , lies all of Paris below you with the Eiffel Tower in the middle of this breathtaking view.

Tom, I was saying that men are probably more interested in remaining single than getting married, as long as they have a girlfriend who treats them like they're married; i.e., who is willing to live with them, do their cooking, laundry, etc., but who doesn't push them about getting married. I think that women are more marriage oriented then men in general, especially, like you say, at an earlier age. Men can date throughout their twenties, thirties, forties and even early fifties before settling down with a 20- or 30-something woman and have a family. For women, you're right, we have to do it much earlier. Anyway, I got off the topic. Sorry. I love the idea of Millie proposing to her boyfriend and I'm sure things will turn out splendidly.

My husband was 36 when we got married, I was 20.We were living together and it was fine with me, then one day he asked me to marry him and I said no, I wanted to wait and be sure...The day came that I thought-we are living together as if we are married, we are making plans for a life together as if we are married,Why not actually BE married!? so at dinner one night, I asked him.And it has been 31 years now~ By the way-I think if someone looked at the statistics, women asking men to marry isn't that rare an occurence
