We were in Italy in June, and visited Venice for the first time. I loved it, and now that we are home, I find myself thinking about it a lot. It is like nowhere else I have ever seen, and impossible to describe. A place where the cars are boats, the city buses are boats, the garbage trucks are boats. Or you walk. We walked from our hotel near the train station to San Marco's Square, and all around everyday. I think the term "getting lost" is a metaphor for wandering and exploring. One night when we were returning to our hotel we were on a little side street on a bridge over a canal when we heard beautiful Vivaldi music. It turned out there was a concert in the building next to us, so we just stood there on that bridge watching the gondolas slide silently by, and listening to "The Four Seasons". It was so magical; we will never forget it.

Another good thing about "getting lost" in Venice is that you will not ever find yourself in any danger. There are plenty of streets in the small town where I live that I would not venture down during the day. In Venice, you can go anywhere, even at night, without fear.

Hi. I was inspired by this thread to take a look at

http://www.veniceby.com/accommod/complet.htm

which seems to concentrate on what it calls 'charming hotels'. I'm wondering if any of you would like to comment on a couple from personal experience?
Thanks, J.

jw,

Good site. If you do a search on this forum for specific hotels, you'll find commentary for many that are listed on www.veniceby.com/
