Getting from CDG airport to hotel

We'll be arriving at CDG airport April 28th around 11 AM. My wife will be 5 months pregnant and we will have our 20 month old with us and stroller, portable crib, and two pieces of luggage (maybe we are crazy!). Our hotel is in the 7th district. Given this, should I just spend the money on a taxi or are there shuttle buses that are cheaper? I don't see us being able to load and unload ourselves from the metro trains quickly enough to use them. Is this assumption correct?

This question has come up before on this forum, but right now it looks like the best postings have slipped off into the archives. Try searching on the specific topic of CDG Airport and see if a few helpful posts don't emerge. Try this site for more info.
http://www.paris-anglo.com/clients/ashuttle.html

The arguments have run as follows:
1. You are tired and jet=lagged, hence, take a taxi for the convenience.
2. Take the RER, then transfer to the metro, no big deal.
3. Take the shuttle service.
4. Take the Roissy bus to a central place in Paris and then take a taxi the rest of the way.
5. Take the RER part of the way and then take a taxi.
And I am sure someone could slip another one in the cracks. You will have an expense to get into the city. Given the amount of equipment you have, I think either the van or a taxi will be your best bet.
I think you've got the answer to your question : in that situation, you don't want to take your wife through subway -unless your broke, or your wife is like mine, she doesn't care. So I confirm bob's suggestion.
Taxi will be from 200 to 400 FF, RER will be ~80 FF up to your hotel's station, but they won't pick you up, you'll have to walk -as everywhere in Paris, not so much, but with your wife pregnant...
Don't worry about loading in the train, it's fast, but the driver WILL WAIT till everybody is safe in.
Santanu,
I just came back yesterday, and it could be a terriblly long walk inside of Paris metro, for instance, change from RER train to the correct metro area. The Rossy bus was so comfortable according to my personal experience. The seat was too small, crowded, you could ended up standing there throughout the whole bus ride. RER is the best, then if your wife is pregnent...it could be frastrating...
Taxi is costly, about $60Usd to 7th arr. Then the best thing you care is your wife doesn't have any problem.
If you have the metro stop of your hotel, I will let you exactly how you get there(how many times you have to change), I've got a map handy.
Best luck.

Santanu,
I just came back from Paris yesterday. The Rossy bus was not so comfortable according to my experience. The seat was too small, fully-packed you could ended up standing there throughout the whole bus ride. You should rule it out totally. RER is the best, then if your wife is pregnent...it could be a bit tricky when you change to the metro area, you don't know how many times you have to change, it could be a lenthy walk inside of the metro. Taxi is costly, about $60Usd to 7th arr. Then only thing you care is your wife feel comfortable on the way to your hotel, if she doesn't feel well physically, you'll be trouble. If you have the metro stop of your hotel, I will let you exactly how you get there(how many times you have to change), I've got a map handy.
Best luck.

Dug around in a previous topic and found the definitive information on query of 'how to get from Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport to your hotel'. I did trim out a few postings, but it's still fairly lengthy. BUT, it pretty much covers all nuances of the transportation issue.

PARIS airport(s) transportation

Author: Michele ([email protected])
Date: 2/24/1999, 10:13 pm ET
Message:
What is the most cost effective, reliable, and convenient transportation from/to the CDG and Orly airports? Does the Metro run from/to either or both airports? Need transportation from CGD into Paris on May 20 around Noon. Most importantly we need to be at Orly airport by 10:30am on June 1.

Author: John ([email protected])
Date: 2/24/1999, 11:44 pm ET
Message:
The best way is to take the RER (train) into Paris. It is quick easy and cost 48F ($8)
I always come in at CDG at terminal 2. You follow the signs to the terminal about (200 yard ) with moving sidewalks,go down 2 levels and buy the ticket and catch the train, It runs about every 15 min.

You can get off at Gare de Nor(sp) or 3 other stops in Paris, I get off in the Latin Quarter at St Michel.

I believe you can do a similar bit to Orly but I have not done it. You can catch the Metro at all the Paris Stations. I think it is the C train

Author: George ([email protected])
Date: 2/24/1999, 11:52 pm ET
Message: Hi Michele,
REA may be the best and cheapest if you travel as much as John does and know where you are going and where to get off, but if you don't the best way is the Airport Shuttle. They cost 89 FF and are waiting at the airport when you walk out and will pick you up at your hotel whenever you want picked up. I think they are wonderful for someone that has no idea how to get there.

Author: ena ([email protected])
Date: 2/27/1999, 10:35 pm ET
Message:
We landed in CDG and our arrangements were with Airport Shuttle. Not being sure of language, direction to hotel, etc. we felt very comfortable in letting them take us directly to our hotel in 7th arr. It cost 89ff for each of us, but we felt it was worth it. Didn't need to worry about lugging luggage down stairs, thru Metro tunnels and etc. and then having to be concerned with dragging all of above from Metro/RER stop, up stairs and getting to the hotel. The drive from the airport to hotel was a wonderful way to see the city, and I can't tell you what a wonderful sight it was to look up and realize you are looking at the Arc de Triomphe! Take the Blue and Yellow Airport Shuttle. You won't be sorry.

Author: Richard ([email protected])
Date: 2/28/1999, 4:33 pm ET
Message:
Michele, Most cost effective, Metro & RER, also most reliable, most convenient, a taxi. Can't help you much with Roissy question, but to Orly use the Metro to Les Halles, change to the RER, to Antony and the Orlyval to Orly. It involves changes, long walks and stairs, but to get to Orly for a 1030A flight you probably want to be there by 900A, which puts you right in the middle of rush hour as far as a taxi is concerned. The fare is 30 francs or 6 tickets or Formule 1 pass, Zone 1 to 4, or Paris Visit Pass, Zone 1 to 5. The average trip time is 30 minutes.

You can also take ORLYVAL which is linked to RER Line B stations. Departure times from Antony station are 6:30 am to 21:16 pm monday through saturday and 7:01 am to 22:55 pm on sunday with a departure every 5 to 7 minutes. It takes 7 minutes to reach Orly airport from Antony station. The first stop is Orly West for Mostly domestic flights, the second is Orly south for international flights. The fare is 52 francs or the Formule 1 pass, Zone 1 to 5 or Paris Visit
Pass, zone 1 to 5.

For futher information on the Paris Transportation Services call from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm 43.46.14.14 and ask for an English speaking person.

Air France coaches are at your disposal to take you to Orly airport from 5:50 am until 11:10 pm with a departure every 12 minutes. Departure from Aérogare des Invalides or at Montparnasse station. The average trip time is 30 minutes between Montparnasse and Orly airport. The fare is 40 francs.

ROISSY CHARLES DE GAULLE AIRPORT

By taxi the fare is about 180 to 280 francs according to destination, time and trafic conditions.

ROISSYBUS can take you to Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport from Opera, rue Scribe right in front of the american express building from 5:45 am to 11 pm with a departure every 15 minutes. The average trip time is 45 minutes.

Get to the Airport as well Roissy Rail from 5:30 am untill midnight, departure every 15 minutes from the many RER stations on line B. The average trip time between Gare du Nord and Roissy airport is 35 minutes.

For further information on the Paris Transportation Services call from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm 43.46.14.14 and ask for an English speaking person.

Air France coaches are at your disposal to take you to Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport from 5:40 am untill 11:00 pm with a departure every 20 minutes from Place Charles de Gaulle Etoile, Porte Maillot and Montparnasse station. The average trip time is 40 minutes between Etoile and Roissy Airport and the fare is 55 francs. The average trip time between Montparnasse station end Roissy airport is about an hour and the fare is 65 francs.

Orly

Here are the alternative ways of getting to Orly, Orlyval being the most expensive but also the quickest, even compared with taxis when there are trafficjam

Orlybus:
Orlybus connects Orly airport to Paris. The three stations are:

Orly Sud, Port H, quay n°4
Orly Ouest, Port J, level 0
Paris, Denfert Rochereau in front of the R.E.R. station

Duration of the trip: approximately 30 minutes (when there are no bottlenecks), a bus departs every 13 minutes.
Tarif: the price of the ticket is 30 Francs unless you posses one of the following transport passes:

Carte 'Paris visite' 5 zones
Carte hebdomadaire, 4 zones
Carte orange ( monthly ticket), 4 zones
Carte integrale (yearly ticket), 4 zones

Before buying your ticket, verify which is the most profitable formula. We recomand you the Carte hebdomadaire

The Metro, which was built during the Paris Exibition of 1900, is
certainly the best way to get round Paris. The buses give you better
scenery but can be very slow, especially during rush hours.

The bus, Metro and RER network is divided into 5 zones for the whole of the Paris region. Zones 1 and 2 correspond to the city of Paris itself and a little of the suburbs. Make sure you buy a ticket with the right number of zones when you travel outside Paris. If stopped with the wrong ticket, you could play the Dumb-American-Tourist, but they'll probably fine you anyway.

In Paris the same ticket is used for the Metro, buses and RER. Hold on to your ticket for the entire journey as it may be checked at any moment by inspectors. There are ticket offices at every RATP and RER station; tickets can also be bought at the "tabacs", that is, where you buy your smokes.

A Metro ticket costs 8 francs or 48 for a carnet of 10 tickets. If you are going to use the Metro alot other formulas could prove more economic.

Carte "Formule 1": This ticket allows you to travel as much as you want during one day. The tarif depends on the number of zones you choose.

Carte "Paris-Visite": This ticket allows you travel first class (though you won't notice the difference) as much as you want during 2, 3, or 5 days. It also offers you reductions of between 20 and 35% on many of the tourist sites in Paris. It is quite expensive and only worth considering if you want to shove a helluva lot of culture into a short space of time.

Carte orange hebdomadaire: This ticket allows you an unlimited number of voyages (second class, but again you won't notice the difference) for a whole week from Monday to Sunday. The Parisains choice and probably the best value for money.

Orlyval:
Orlyval connects Orly airport to Antony R.E.R. station (line B) from where you can easily reach the capital Tarif: price of the ticket is 52 Francs, unless you have one of the following tickets:

Carte Paris Visite, 5 zones

Orlyrail:
Orlyrail connects Orly airport to Port du Rungis R.E.R station (line C)
Tarif: price of the ticket for Paris is 28 Francs, unless you have one of the following tickets:

Carte 'Paris visite' 5 zones
Carte hebdomadaire, 4 zones

Car Air France: ( 01 49 38 57 57 )
Connects Orly to les Invalides or Montparnasse Hotel Meridien
Ticket price: 40 F one-way, 65 F return

Jetbus:
Connects Orly to Villejuif-Louis Aragon Metro station, which is the nearest station to the airport.
Service from 5h48 to 23h36, every 12 minutes
Ticket price:21 F one-way, 42 F return

Author: hcw ([email protected])
Date: 3/11/1999, 2:59 pm ET
Message: I am so pleased to see all the positive comments re. I wanted to thank everyone for their help. I decided that the Airport Shuttle was the best combination of convenience and cost.

Santanu: Above info. on airport shuttles is very helpful and worth checking outwebsite and phone #. Taxis are expensive and tight for more than two people as well as baby equipment.French taxis are what we in US would call compact and sub-compact cars! Most often taxi drivers charge per item along with people rate. With all things considered , I would heartily suggest booking the airport shuttle for 89FF or $15. persperson . They may not charge for child and thay have plenty of room for luggage and all the stuff you will be carrying. Very convenient to book ahead and certainly saves hassles of changing buses, trains etc. It is more economical and much more comforatble. I will be taking airport shuttles directly to my hotel when I get there after flying all night in 2 weeks. There will 3 of us and 3 pieces of luggage plus carryons so we thought this was the best choice. I would appreciate this convenience and comfort if I were your pregnant wife...I'd probably insist on it!Enjoy Paris.Julie
It has always struck me in this forum to see the hassle people put themselves into to save an amount of money that is maybe 0.5 % of the total cost of their trip !
OK, Santanu, let's look at the figures quietly : if you take this shuttle bus, you'll pay about 200 F (provided they don't make you pay extra for the crib and the baby, which has to be seen ! ). I don't know whether you've already been to Paris and/or speak the language, I assume you don't. So, picture yourself, after 7 to 12 hours of transatlantic flight, landing in a foreign airport, having to figure out at what gate this particular shuttle starts from, maybe having to make a phone call. Then, once you are aboard, you'll be given a free tour of 3 or 4 Paris hotels and traffic before they eventually drop you at your hotel.

Of course, a cab will cost you more : say 300 to 350 F with the supplements (10 F per piece of luggage, remember there's not tip in French cabs) ; but at mid-day, the traffic is relatively OK, it should take 30-40 mn or so to get to the 7th, hassle-free. BTW, the average taxi in Paris is a Mercedes, so it should be enough to accommodate your paraphernalia and the 2 of you + the baby. Otherwise, just pass your turn in the line and take a "monospace" cab (French equivalent of a van), and you'll have plenty of room.

OK, to sum it up : the taxi will cost you at most 150 F more than the shuttle, i. e. 75 F per adult, i. e. 12 $. No reservation, no meandering in Paris, no stress in the airport. And compare it with the overall budget for your trip...
