Getting From Athens Airport to Port Piraeus

We are arriving by air in Athens on 10Feb00 and not with our group. We have to get to the port on our own. Suggestions for easiest and least expensive? Cab? Does anyone know the cost and how long it takes. We only need one-way transfer. Arriving in Rome at the end of our cruise with the group intact. No need for transfers. Already taken care of. Thanks. Just found this site and I am definitely a "travel junkie".

I haven't taken transportation from the airport to the Piraeus, but I've driven the distance. A cab should take from 25 to 40 minutes depending on traffic and I estimate you should spend approx $10.

If, by a slim chance, you're taking a Renaissance cruise, they should provide for free transfers.

Paulo

Yes, a cab would be the easiest. I was in Greece 9/97 and took a cab from Athens to the Port. I don't remember the cost, but it was not expensive, and it was easy. We took a bus back and it was really slow. It's not worth saving the extra dollars!

Bus service 019 runs every 50 minutes from the airport (every hour betweeen 0500 and 0800)to Piraeus. The cost in September 2000 was 250 drachmas, 500 drachmas if the journey was after 23.30. The journey time was 35 minutes.

A taxi will cost around 2500/3000 (double after 23.30) and the journey should take approx 30 minutes.

If I had to choose then it would be the bus. Trusting Athens taxi drivers has always been a problem of mine.

Bill

Thanks guys! Yes, we are on a Renaissance cruise, but doing our own air.Alas, transfers are voided when you do that! We are stopping over in Paris for a day just "because". It is one of our favorite places. Just staying at the Hilton airport for convenience and dashing into town on the train. Leaving next day to join the rest of our party of 14!

Renaissance "rules of the game" must be different in Brazil ... A friend of mine bought a cruise only (no flights and stuff) last year, informed de schedulled arrival time and they were expecting him at the airport with the free ride!

Anyway, the $10 for the taxi ride won't break any banks

Paulo

I arrived at the airport around 5AM. The ferry I was to catch wasn't departing until about 10:30, so I had a lot of time to kill. I actually didn't mind the bus, because you sit higher than in a cab and it goes slow enough to take in the local scene - which by the way is not very nice. Maybe they are cleaning the place up, since the Olympics are to be held in Athens.

Just to agree with Bill, I would DEFINITELY take the bus from Athens airport to Pireaus. It's really easy, the bus leaves from right outside departures, and you can buy your ticket on the bus.

Most Greek people are really honest, but there is a big question mark over some of the taxi drivers that operate from the airport. The advice is, make sure the meter is running and set to tariff '1' (if travelling in the daytime), and the price should be around 3000 drachmas. However, the one time I did this, the price was 6000 drachams.

The guidebooks recommend arguing with the taxi driver, threatening to call the police or your hotel owner. However, as a girl travelling alone, I bottled out and just paid it. I know...that's why they think they can get away with it!

However, since then, I've always taken the bus.

PS Once the new airport at Sparta is open, I'd appreciate someone posting the directions for getting a bus to Athens city centre and to Pireaus. Thanks!
