Getting around Venice at night
Hi,
I am planning to reach Venice around 11pm at night. My hotel is not near the station, and I am wondering how I can get around to this place without walking! Any transportation sugestions? Also, I'd appreciate if someone can point out places to stay, preferably close the station ( under L150,000).

Thanks in advance!
Nagesh

Good morning, Nagesh
Have not stayed at any hotels near the Santa Lucia Station other than the Carlton Executive which is located on the opposite side of the canal from the station, not more than 100 yrds or so from the station, but its price range would be over the 150,000ITL. Check out
www.hotelguide.ch/ The city of Venice and listings of all hotels, you might be able to make a choice from this list which is very through.. Richard of Hickory Hills, Il....

Before I changed a hotel reservation, I would email, FAX, or call the hotel for their suggestion on how to get there at that time of the night. I think the vaporetti still run at ll p.m., but you should make certain of that. They stop right in front of the railway station. I would prefer to stay closer to Piazza San Marco or the Rialto rather than in the station area.

Hi,

We returned from Venice in mid October. When travelling at night on the vaporetti,we had to make sure we were where we wanted to be at 8 pm. as they made the last run around that time. I don't know if this still the case in peak season. Can't recall email address but there is one for the ferries etc in and around Venice. I will email you if I can find it Denise
It's true that it is very difficult to find one's way around Venice at first, especially if you are arriving at night. Please pack light so you're not miserable walking around, and be preprared to walk around for an hour or so. I met some people in Venice who said that they arrived at night and it took them hours to find their way. I would ask your hotel to provide you with directions from the station, if possible. We got our hotel from Rick Steve's guide, and he gives specific directions from the station.

Don't worry. Venice is spectacular at night, and you'll enjoy your walk.

My wife is a native of Venice and we visit the city every year. Sitting at my desk looking at a schedule of all the ferry boat routes, I can assure you that they run 24 hours a day, although not as often at night. Two good suggestions above are (1) get a hotel near San Marco square, to save a lot of walking and ferry boat riding, and (2) call or FAX your hotel to get instructions on how to get there from the train station.
