Getting Around

Hi All,

From reading the forum,it seems like Italy is a popular honeymoon destination. We'll be honeymooning there in early September and I have some specific questions with regard to getting around. I would like to be moderate in my spending. At the same time, I want safe and reliable service.

1. What is the best way to get from the airport in Naples to Capri? And with what company?

2. What is the best way to take a day trip to Rome? Some friends recommended the train. How easy is it to take when your not a native?

3. What is the best way to get from Capri to Positano? And with what company?

4. I have been told to get a driver to take us back to the airport in Naples from Positano. Our flight is ridiculously early (7:00 AM). Can anyone recommend a car service they have used in the past?

5. Finally, we live in the U.S. and need to arrive at the airport 2-3 hours in advance of take off. IS the same true for flights leaving Italy? If so, we need to be in the car by 3 AM to get to Naples by 4/4:30AM.

I appreciate any insight anyone can offer.

Hi Leah -

1. Bus to Molo Beverello, then hydrofoil/ferry to Capri

There are 2 bus services which run between Capodichino airport and the Molo Beverello port area (Piazza Municipio) :

- Alibus Airport shuttle
- ANM bus No. 3S

Both run about every 20-30 mins.

2. Train. For timetables see:

http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

3. For hydrofoil/ferry timetables Capri-Positano go to:

http://www.capri.net/salsa/lang/en/page/transport.html

4. These Positano-based drivers have all been recommended here:

www.positanocarservice.com
www.flaviogioia.com
www.limocarservice.net
www.benvenutolimos.com (Praiano)

5. Check-in will probably not open before about 5.a.m (- your hotel/driver will be able to advise on departure time from Positano)

Hope this helps ...

Hi W,

Good advice from Steve.

I do not recommend a daytrip to Rome from Capri. You will spend more time in transit than in Rome.

Will you spend any time in Naples?

We were pleased with Limousine Service Sorrento (Renato Cuomo)
www.cuomonet.it

Also consider Francesco. http://www.francescomarrapese.com/

Enjoy your visit.

If you've read any threads here about train travel you will see that it really is easy. If you go to www.trenitalia.com and click on the word "Trenitalia" in the dark green section, then click on "english" in the upper right corner. Put in your start and finish cities and the day and approx time you want to leave. You'll get a listing of trains that leave around that time and after. If you print off these schedules before you leave home you can arrive at the train station 30-40 min before you want to leave, circle the train you wish to get tickets for, then slide the paper under the ticket window indicating how many ticket you want and whether you wish to have first or 2nd class.

Knowing a few words of Italian is always helpful and respectful. Of course, there are variations of buying tickets from what I just wrote, but it really is easy and efficient.

I think it would be easier/faster to daytrip to Rome from Capri(ferry to Naples/train to Rome) than Positano (ferry to Salerno?/train to Rome). Are you staying in both locations? If training from Naples, book the AV train as it's fastest (90 minutes).

Thank you all for your suggestions. All this information will make my trip go a lot smoother.

Ira - I will have to look into the ease of Capri to Rome vs. Positano to Rome. Thanks for the insight!

Hi W,

For Positano to Rome, you can take the SITA bus or the ferry to Salerno and the train from there, or the SITA bus to Sorrento or Meta, the Circumvesuviana commuter train to Naples and the train from there.

Either way, I suggest that you save Rome for your next visit.

You will go back.

If you get bored with Capri and the AC, visit Naples.

Leah - Rome would really be best as an overnight trip.

As a day-trip you'd have to make a very early start to make it worthwhile.

You could catch the first ferry/hydrofoil from Capri to Naples - and be in Rome between 09.00-10.00.

For timetables see:
http://www.capri.net/salsa/lang/en/page/transport.html

Train timetables are on:
http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

Public transport doesn't really start early enough for you to do it from Positano. Your best bet from there might be to get an early morning taxi to Sorrento - and catch the 06.00 Sorrento-Rome bus (- operator: Marozzi).

Alternatively there are organised excursions to Rome from the Amalfi Coast - but they don't get there much before mid-day, so your time there is limited.

Hope this helps ...
