Germany and surrounding locations

My husband and I are planning a three week European vacation. The only thing we are certain is that we will spend some time in Frankfurt, Germany. How and where would you recommend that we spend our time?

Also, as we are somewhat limited on when we can travel, please tell us what you can about travelling in December (best for us) and March (we could probably go then).

How can anybody tell you what to do and where to go without any knowlewdge of what you guys like or don't, where you'd been or don't, how you preferred to move around or won't, etc.

Either go to a travel agent, open a guide book, or provide more info.

Charlotte, There are many variables to
consider---are you driving?
Whatever you decide, I would include
these destinations in your itinerary:
Rothenburg, Prague, Salzburg, Hallstatt,
and a Bavaria location. If you skip Prague then subsitute Venice and/or
Luzern. Let me know if you want more
detailed help.

Charlotte,
We lived in Germany for 5 years and I loved Germany in December. I loved visiting all the Christmas markets there. Each one was a little different than the last. I definitely recommend seeing Rothenburg and driving the Romantic Road. Nuremburg is a beautiful city in winter as well and Munich also. If you go to Bavaria, it's so beautiful in Garmich and Oberammergau although there is a lot more snow there that time of year than up near Frankfurt. If you have a rental car, you can drive from Germany to the Alsace region of France and see Strassbourg, you can also go to Switzerland to the Zurich area and to Austria if you are down near Bavaria. I could never get enough of Germany and that area of Europe. It's beautiful there.

Charlotte,
Before we can begin to offer meaningful advice, we need to know quite a bit about you and your plans. Three weeks in Europe, but "some time in Frankfurt". How much is "some time"?. How do you plan to travel, by car or train or a combination of both? What are your interests and those of your husband? Cities or countryside? Art, history, language, architecture, music, dining, shopping, folk crafts? What do you infer by "surrounding locations"? Are you interested in France or Switzerland, Belgium or the Netherlands, Austria or Czech Republic? Give us a little more to work with and you'll get some meaningful suggestions.
