Interesting about the hops. DH likes to tell us about "hardest job of his life", working as a teenager harvesting hops, somewhere near Regensburg. All the other kids ran away after a few days, but he stuck it out for the whole harvest.
I guess it's the Bavarian version of "walking to school -ten miles-each way- uphill-in the snow".

Maybe just nitpicking, but the pedantic me needs to point out that that wheat beer is either called
<b>"Hefewei<u>z</u>en"</b>
or
<b>"Wei<u>ss</u>bier"</b>
but <b>definitely not</b> "Hefeweisen".

Yes hsv - you ARE nitpicking. No maybes about it - LOL. I have enough trouble spelling in English, let alone German. I consider the fact that I only misspelled the word by 1 letter as a personal success

indeed! German admittedly is pretty hard.
BTW I think Trader Joe's is a good suggestion (after all it is German owned) for obtaining authentic products (although I hate Weizenbier exactly for its banana taste - so glad you mentioned it! I always receive disbelieving stares when mentioning that it tastes like fermented bananas ).

LOL hsv, I did not know that it was German owned, but just looked it up on Wikipedia. I knew it was privately held (if not, I would have bought stock in it years ago).
Keeping in the spirit of the original thread: Trader Joe's frozen strudels are imported from Germany and are not too bad for a $3 dessert. We also buy Bavarian Rye bread, Gerolsteiner water, Bahlsen cookies... I'm sure I'll think of something else.
Maybe the staff should switch from those Hawaiian print shirts to lederhosen

Sorry it took a while to responds. "Lachs" is the German spelling of lox. It's not smoked salmon because the curing process is different. When I had a lachs, creamcheese and Bagel in Munich, I knew I was close to heaven.

Don't be too hard on youself ;-) 90% of all people who post here, can't even write "Fuessen" or "Duesseldorf" properly . Hopefully the www.bahn.de site will punish them for their poor spelling, but that's a different story

the contents of your fridge sound a lot like those of my relatives in the L.A. area.
Always amazing coming to visit an area that's about half-way round the world just to find Gerolsteiner mineral water, raw-smoked ham and German beers (although they could improve their choice on those) readily available.
