Interesting about the hops. DH likes to tell us about "hardest job of his life", working as a teenager harvesting hops, somewhere near Regensburg. All the other kids ran away after a few days, but he stuck it out for the whole harvest.

I guess it's the Bavarian version of "walking to school -ten miles-each way- uphill-in the snow".

BTW I think Trader Joe's is a good suggestion (after all it is German owned) for obtaining authentic products (although I hate Weizenbier exactly for its banana taste - so glad you mentioned it! I always receive disbelieving stares when mentioning that it tastes like fermented bananas ).

LOL hsv, I did not know that it was German owned, but just looked it up on Wikipedia. I knew it was privately held (if not, I would have bought stock in it years ago).

Keeping in the spirit of the original thread: Trader Joe's frozen strudels are imported from Germany and are not too bad for a $3 dessert. We also buy Bavarian Rye bread, Gerolsteiner water, Bahlsen cookies... I'm sure I'll think of something else.

Maybe the staff should switch from those Hawaiian print shirts to lederhosen

Sorry it took a while to responds. &quot;Lachs&quot; is the German spelling of lox. It's not smoked salmon because the curing process is different. When I had a lachs, creamcheese and Bagel in Munich, I knew I was close to heaven.
