I was trying to do Rolandinsanfrancisco a favour. I cannot speak from experience; although I have spent time in Aix-en-Provence, I am female and was there as part of a heterosexual couple.

There are hundreds of gay travel Web sites out there; Rolandinsanfrancisco should try some of them.

Rolandinsanfrancisco: Though I am now old enough to be "out of the loop" on this stuff, my distinct impression is that you really only get "gay" places on the coast or in Paris.

Maybe its beyond your comprehension that there might be people on this forum who could answer Roland's questions. Or do you consider it the personal domain of certain kinds of people?

There is a place I have heard rave reviews about from a couple of gay friends and I think it's called Big Ruby's www.bigrubys.com. It's run by a gay couple and it's high-end and they organize tours and cultural itineraries as well.

This what you may be looking for.

The thing is, there isn't that much of a need for exclusively gay holiday facilities in most of Europe. Most hotels are at least "gay-neutral", and mind their own business.

Why would you want a specific gay resort? I have never heard of gay resorts. In San Francisco maybe, but in Provence?

I don't think it's either friendly or fair to ask a poster -- this or any other -- "Why would anyone want what you want?"

So I'll offer an answer in his stead, with which he may or may not agree:

1. Some people want to party with their own kind
2. A larger number, I suspect, simply want to know they will not be unwelcome, rather than risk getting the fish-eye from their hosts. (Being tolerated and being welcome are two different things)

The second may not be much of an issue in a large place but is a definite risk in a small place.

PS: Only in San Francisco? What about Key West, Ogunquit, Rehoboth, Provincetown, Montreal?

A mon sens, neutre = indifference. Gay friendly indique qu'on recevra un acceuil tres ouvert et qu'on sera donc "welcome" chez eux.

Gay friendly n'indique pas necessairement que les proprietaires sont gais eux-memes mais plutot qu'ils ont une certaine ouverture d'esprit.

J'espere bien que l'usage du francais ne figure pas dans la liste des delits a etre censures par Fodors -- le forum a beaucoup souffert d'un exces de zele de leur cote, a mon avis

je n'ai jamais vu d'hotels mentionnant "gay neutral" d'ailleus. J'espère que ça veut dire qu'ils le sont tous... j'ai trouvé un nouveau site pour mettre l'appart "gay hermes" joli nom, non? j'ai fait un lien vers lui sur mes pages anglophones. Pas de guests de ce côté là encore, dommage.(tant pis pour la censure !)

Tulip. there is a "gay resort" a few hundred feet down the street from our house, here in Fort Lauderdale. In fact, we have quite a few here. BTW, it is one of the top 5 gay destinations in the US.

Recently had an interesting discussion on a related topic with a noted social scientist. The topic was about the paucity of gay bars in Sweden. Turns out the few that exist are basically for tourists, attributed to the fact that for the locals the notion of a separate bar for gays only just seems silly.
Of course there are European destinations that are hisorically gay identified - Mykonos, Sitges, etc. - but in other less specialized venues I have not encountered problems, and have been all over Europe with same sex traveling companions (sometimes just a friend, sometimes more intimate.) In fact, I can recall several times when the innkeeper would inquire "one bed or two?" with total nonchalance. My sense is it's just not as big an issue as has been made (mostly for marketing purposes) in the US.
