Gault et Millau Guide
Someone suggested picking up a Gault et Millau guide for restaurant listings. I have checked both Amazon and B&N, and they do not carry them - only for Paris. I have also checked several local bookstore and cannot locate one.<BR><BR>Do they make a guide only for Provence or is the guide for all of France? <BR><BR>Do they have a web site?

I always use www.gaultmillau.fr, it's very useful. I think sometimes they have problems getting their new editions published, they aren't quite as regular as some other guidebooks. I have seen their book for all of France in a bookstore where I live, but it had probably been in stock for a while. I"m not sure but I think maybe you can get it in French but not in English (I saw one for 2001 in French on a NY City French book website). I'm not sure, but maybe they don't translate it every year, or the English one comes out a year later? I use the web site, anyway, it's great and you can make listings just for the specific area you want.

Ron:<BR>I checked out the site, and book is sold out. Found it on Amazon, but is out of print, and last print appears to be 1999. I wonder how valuable something that old would be?<BR><BR>I did find the regular Gault Millaut guides finally - but $79! Can that be true? Are they really worth that price, or should I just stick with my Michelin guide?

Michelin and Gault Millau serve similar markets in different ways. Michelin is famously taciturn - I believe that they will not respond to criticism of their ratings, and certainly never explain them. Gault Millau is absolutely the opposite, highly loquacious and opinionated (check out their review of Le Tour d'Argent for a flavour).<BR><BR>Michelin has a reputation for being conservative and a little swayed by outward signs of inward grace. Many believe that the difference between the best two star and the "average" three star is the number of waiters/quality of napery etc, rather than the quality of food.<BR><BR>I would risk saying that Gault Millau's fault is that it is too fashion conscious. But, if you want some idea of what a hotel/restaurant is actually like, you'll have to go to Gault Millau. I don't think Michelin's little red comments are really up to the job!
