Better plan carefully if you decide to go by train. The rail system doesn't go to a lot of the charming towns and across some of the more scenic areas. You could always combine the two modes of travel. I would plan on renting a car at some point of your trip.

Currently EUR0.849 per litre at my local garage. Going by train is not a good idea, it's not that cheap and only the main towns and cities are served, more details at http://www.irishrail.ie The AA in Ireland also posts prices at http://www.theaa.ie or alternatively check out http://www.irishfuelprices.com
