Garmisch-Partenkirchen

I fly into Munich early on July 10, and would like to head straight into the alps. I have two days free before I have to be back in Munich on the 12th. I would like to get out walking in the mountains and think Garmisch-Partenkirchen would suit.
Is it easy to get from Munich Airport to Garmisch-Partenkirchen?
Any recommendations for a good, clean budget-end hotel?
Also for the best half day and full day walk in the clear mountain air?
Thanks

Hi capkidnappers,

Yes, it's dead easy to get from the airport to Garmisch. Use the German rail site at

www.bahn.de

to get the exact schedule. You'll be departing from Munich airport and your destination will obviously be Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Be sure to use the European format for the date (day.month.year). You'll probably find that you'll be changing trains in München-Pasing.

What is your exact budget for your hotel? I normally recommend the 3-star Hotel Bavaria because I love its location (and I've heard good reports of it).

There are dozens, if not hundreds, of walks in the area. Do you mind a steep walk, or do you want to keep it flat? Some nice (practically) flat walks are on the Kramerplateauweg, going from the Pflegersee (or the 12th Century Werdenfels ruins that are nearby) to Grainau, or from the Riessersee to the Kreuzeck cable car. There are some wonderful flat walks between the Geroldsee, Barmsee, and the village of Krün. Or you can walk up the Partnach Gorge. Or you can walk up the Wank. Those are some local favorites.

Here's a site to start your research:

http://www.gapa.de/tourenplaner/

Just open "summer touring," then click on hiking or jogging or which one you like. It will show you the most popular trails.

Have fun!

Another option for hiking is to take the Hausberg cable car to the top then hike at the top, or spend 1/2 day walking down. You'll get the benefit of views without having to trek all the way to the top by foot.

The Hausbgerg is close enough to the main G-P rr station to walk, or there may be a regional train or bus that'll take you there quicker.

J62 brings up a good point about accessibility. I don't have a car, and I also get to the trailheads (mostly) using public transportation. All of the walks I gave you are easy to access from town (Kramerplateauweg & Riessersee), by town bus (Partnach Gorge & Wank), or by regional bus (Geroldsee). Once you know where you're staying and have picked out a few walks, we can help you find the start point!

Great, thanks for your help. The Bavaria Hotel looks good, possibly I should look more to the budget end but after flying from New Zealand I don't want anything too rough.
Being in the mountains, above the forest, walking along or up and down as long as the weather is good is what will suit me!

Hi again,

Then you'd probably want to take the cable car up to the top of the Wank (or walk up) and walk from there, or take the Eckbauer cable car from near the Olympia stadium (or walk up) and go from there, or the Alpspitze cable car or the Kreuzeck cable car, and walk from there. You can check these out from the site I gave you above.

You can get to the Wank by bus #3, 4, or 5; you can get to the Olympia stadium by bus #1 or #2; you can get to the Alpspitze or the Kreuzeck cable cars with bus #1 or #2.

Have fun!
