Garbage in Naples

I was watching a news report recently and they are up to their eyballs in garbage....not a garbage strike but rather, no more room in the landfill site. I am surprised that I haven't heard anything more about it. By the pictures, I am definitely taking Naples off of our itinerary. We are going to Italy in September and can't imagine them taking care of so much garbage by then!
Has anyone been there lately?

cipparone - we did have a discussion on this a while back and i thought the problem had been solved. Is the report you heard really recent or is the garbage piling up again?

The thread i started is entitled
Naples Stinks!

and several folks had first-hand reports.

Nonesense! Naples is plagued with an inabilty to get rid of its surplus refuse. Permission to build more incinerators is being held up. This is a good example of over-population. Tourists never take their waste with them. Stay home and help Naples battle its waste disposal problem .

So the rumors of the problem being somewhat 'cleaned' up are not true and garbage is everywhere in naples like it was in spring?

Tourists will stay away because of it if they know the extent of the problem

Hi cipparone and PalenQ,

I saw a blip a couple weeks ago on another European blog (thorntree) that mentioned the garbage problem is back and is about as bad as it was in late May, after it built up for several weeks. They had cleaned it up pretty well in the center as of the beginning of June but things must have gone downhill since then.
