"The food in Portugal is not "crappy"

I was in Lisbon and Porto for a week each in March, and we had some very good meals in both. Having said that, we had a higher percentage of "mediocre" meals than I would have expected. We are not really "foodies" , and seldom eat in high end restaurants.

Can you indicate places where you gave eat those good meals ?

We often use trip advisor to get restaurants recommendations. Thats not fool proof but most of the time that does the trick.

We were in Germany last year and we have hoped that the food would be better in Portugal, maybe we were wrong ! The German good Washington not bad, but lack of fresh veggies.

Tostaky, scroll up and look at rialtogrl's restaurant suggestions. We ate at several, some with her, and her recommendations are good. The Avillez restaurant will need a reservation.

From that location, tostaky, all the places I recommended are within walking distance. You might also ask the person you are renting the apartment from, if they have any recommendations.

You mentioned veggies.. A Bolina has some really tasty salads.

Rialtogrl: Thanks once again ! I'll ask to the owner. From your knowledge, is it a good location ?

Socaltraveler: About my Lisbon lodging, I don't exactly know what neighborhood it it is buy I can say that in on Rua de Santa Justa, betweem Rossi Station and Baixa-Chiado station. Once again is it a good location ?

For sightseeing that is a very good location. Just know that you are sharing that space with a gazillion other travelers. You can walk to many places from that street. If you need a food market (not so easy to find) there is a little market on Rua de São João which is parallel to your apartment.

You might want to start a different thread if you need more info, we kind of veered off here from Mr. Bourdain and his show.

You will likely get more useful information with a thread of your own, tostaky. I only started this one as a heads' up but like so often here the chat took us around the block, including a whole new level of abuse I'd never have enjoyed otherwise. Never a dull moment and a skin thickening exercise thrown in for free.

Ditto, trying to figure out who this person was in another fodor life. When Bourdain goes to any city, say Boston he will pick a dive in South Boston where tourist don't venture but it is fun to watch.

We watched it yesterday, more as a travelogue on Porto than as a how to find places to eat or even what to eat.

"...more as a travelogue on Porto..."

Indeed, and from a singular point of view, entertainment for its own sake.

"...trying to figure out who this person was in another fodor life."

The level of hysteria reminded me of the American-lives-in-Italy, she of multiple identites.

Bingo, Mme Perdu, I think you have sleuthed it out. She of multiple identities appears to be using more than one at a time this round. Exhausting.

I'm headed to my brothers for a week and he has satellite TV and a DVR so I am hoping to be able to watch the episode there. Thanks for posting about it MmePerdu.

Just for the record, I watched the Anthony Bourdain show last night. Thank you@MmePedu for the heads up so I could record and watch at my leisure.
I think everything needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
Mr Bourdain does a lovely job of just giving a hint of other cultures and foods we might not know about otherwise. While I wouldn't eat most of them I LOVE watching his show for the fun history, cultural sidebars and people watching. I will be in Porto in the fall and can't wait!!
I am such a lover of Fodors I get confused when it gets dramatic.......Its just travel and we all get to experience it in our own way. This is supposed to be fun talk.
My 2 cents.....
