From Positano to Naples via ferry?boat vs driving?

Help! I can't find any info on taking the ferry or a boat from Positano to Naples. (From there, we are taking the train from Napoli Centrale to Rome.) Since we'll see the Amalfi Coast by car going in to Positano, we thought it would be a nice change to go back to Naples by sea. Can we find a boat that will take us straight to Naples, or do we have to stop in Sorrento, change boats(with luggage), etc. Has anyone done this?? Thanks, LeslieTraveler

I have done this -- I took the Metro del Mare from Naples (Molo Beverello) to Positano and back again.

It was a relatively easy and lovely way to arrive in Positano, and it worked out fine. The only hard part was finding the right ticket booth at Molo Beverello and getting on the right boat, but if you are only doing the Positano-Naples part, you won't have to worry about that. There is no confusion in Positano - one ticket window, one pier.

PS: Although the boat does make a couple of stops along the way (I think Sorrento is one of them, but I may be wrong), there is no getting off and changing boats.

Hi Leslie - The alternative route - ferry to Salerno - is similar time-wise (- and possibly more convenient as Salerno station is 3 mins walk from the dock).

You can get a train direct from Salerno to Rome:
http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

Hope this helps ...

Steve

P.S. Alternatively in summer there is a Positano-Rome bus service (- dep. 16.10 approx) - which is the budget option (€ 20)

Steve_James From Positano you stated we can take a train from Salerno station to Rome? I thought we had to go back to Naples to get to Rome. Is this a direct route or does it make many stops? Can you give me additional information? Thanks

Hi Patty - It's the main line to Rome.

It passes through Naples - but you won't have to change there IF you catch one of the through trains from Salerno.

You can find timetables for AV, ES and IC trains from Salerno to Rome at:
http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

Hope this helps ...

Is it difficult to travel (with luggage) from the ferry in Naples to the train station in order to continue on to Rome?

(we are thinking of doing the same thing as Leslie, Positano - Rome, using a ferry and train)

Hi Kate - It's 10 mins by tram or taxi.

TRAM:

The tram stop is 100m from the dock at Molo Beverello.
Get tickets in advance (- from dockside newsagents) - and 'validate' on boarding.

TAXI:

Taxis are normally waiting next to the dock.
N.B. Make sure you 'fix' the fare before boarding.
The going rate is approx. €10

Hope this helps ...

Steve

P.S. As mentioned above, in summer there is a Positano-Rome bus service (- dep. 16.10 approx) - which is a relatively hassle-free budget option:

Journey time: 4.5 hrs approx
Fare: € 20

Steve - How far is Salerno from Positano? I guess we take a car service to Salerno. Would you know approx how much the fare would be? Also, are these fast trains from Salerno to Rome? I know I need to look at the train schedules but I find them a little confusing. Do you think I need to buy tickets in advance? Sorry for all the questions but you seem so knowledgable and willing to help. You are best!

Patty - The Salerno option is a good one ONLY if you take the boat (1hr10': €8) from Positano
- Deps: 10.00, 12.00 ...

e.g. The 10.00 ferry to Salerno would allow you to catch the
11.42 Eurostar from Salerno (- arr. Rome 14.16)

(Salerno station is a short walk from Salerno dock)

For other train times see:
http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

IF you prefer to use a car service from Positano, take it to Naples station, NOT Salerno.
The going rate is € 100 approx.

Hope this helps ...

Steve

Note: The Marozzi bus is a big saving for families if you're not in a hurry ...

Thanks so much to all of you for your response re: Positano to Naples via ferry. It's fun planning this month long trip to Italy, but difficult as well, when I've never been there before!
It's wonderful to have all this great information. Hopefully, I'll be able to help others when we return!

Leslie

Don't know if you will check in again on this thread but for me, the boat would be a much better option.

The roads of the Amalfi Coast make me terribly car sick. The bus was the utter worst.
