French insurance requirements when renting

On the website of the Paris apt. I'm renting I came upon the following insurance requirements. I'm confused because when I go to travelex the insurance is for things like illness, cancelled flights, etc. There is no mention on the site about personal liability that I can see.

I've got a call into my homeowner's insurance (in the states) to see if I'm covered through them. What does everyone else do?

Insurance
French law requires all parties to be covered by comprehensive Travel Insurance, including coverage for personal liability, while occupying a rental property.

The client is therefore strongly recommended to arrange a comprehensive travel insurance policy (which can include cancellation coverage, such as www.travelex-insurance.com) and to have full coverage for the party’s personal belongings, public liability etc, since these are not otherwise covered .

hi amwosu,

I had a similar problem. I'm renting from lodgis.com (I haven't been there yet--I go next month) and I thought I could get the insurance through them. But they direct you to a 3rd party site and the entire policy is french!

I wont' sign something I can't read. A couple of people here pointed out that's what the deposit is for. (My deposit is 587e which I think is pretty sizeable.)

Someone else pointed out that lodgis does a great deal of long-term rentals--so maybe that's where this type of insurance comes into play.

I've already dealt with the apt. owner by email and we've worked out how I'm paying etc. and not once has he mentined the insurance. I've decided not even to bother with now.

I just got word that my homeowner's policy covers personal liability in France.

I have only bothered with travel insurance once when required to show proof of insurance by a group tour agency (a bike tour of the Tour de France). I wonder what the percentage of Fodorites is that always get travel insurance vs. those that never get it...

Does anyone else deal with this or do you just ignore the insurance requirements?

amwosu, I meant to respond to this thread yesterday. Our household insurance covers our personal liability when we rent a house or apartment in France. It also covers damage to or loss of any personal property that we have with us.

My wife and I also have travel insurance that covers the cost of medical treatment and evacuation outside Canada.

I must confess that I haven't bought cancellation insurance for many, many years. I've made a note to look into it for our trip to Paris in December.
