French Holidays, May, '05

I know that there are a number of holidays in France in May, and all I can think of is Ascension and Whitmonday, off hand. Anyone know the dates of those and others for '05? Thank you!

I don't have a 2005 calendar in front of me, but there is essentially one holiday per week during May in France. Fixed dates are May 1 (Labor Day) and May 8 (WWII Victory Day). Then you have moving religious holidays - Pentecost and Whit Monday. However, the French government has, I believe, recently declared that Whit Monday will no longer be a holiday, or at least won't mean a day off work.

I checked www.earthcalendar.net

The holidays are early and thick in May 2005 for France due to Easter being so early, March 27th. May 1, 5, 8 & 16 are holidays.

As StCirq mentioned France is supposed to be eliminating Whit Monday (Pentecost) next year which is May 16th.

For the last 4 years I've been in France the first week of May. I'll plan around that if I go next year.

I realized I was already having to plan around May 1 and May 8 then just read about Ascension this morning. If my trip schedule goes as planned, I would be sight-seeing in the Sarlat area that day. Would I get in tremendous traffic jams? Would the restaurants and shops be closed?

Thanks, all. I'm trying to plan a family trip for '05 using ff miles, and all I can find available is early May. I've been there several times in later May, but never that early. By any chance, Indytravel, were you in Provence in early May? We're thinking of renting a house down there, and I hope it won't be too cool and rainy at that time. (I know it varies greatly from year to year, week to week, etc., but would appreciate any input about that season in the south. Merci!

Hi grandmere. The closest I made it to Provence was Ales in early May 2003.

That year the weather was quite pleasant. Warm, sunny and mid-70's during the afternoon, down into the low 60's at night. It didn't rain at all the 3 days I was there.
