If you do a topic search here you will find informaion on both areas. Both are very enjoyable for different reasons--so it would be a personal decision. Both are do-able

You don't have to drive out of Paris. You could train to a nearby city, i.e. Fontainebleau, to pick up the rental. We enjoyed lunching in Fontainebleau and visiting Moret s/Loing and Vaux le Vicomte as we headed into Burgundy. Or as suggested train deeper into Burgundy to Dijon or Lyon to get the car.

Hi lj,

>i meant train to bordeaux, then spend four days in the dordogne.!!<

Also a good idea. Do you like duck?

See my trip report:
http://fodors.com/forums/threadselec...p;tid=34676645

I suggest that you train to/from Libourne. It's much easier to get to/from than Bordeaux.

Hi Khori

>What is the TGVEst? ..Is there a website for schedules?<

It is the new high-speed train from Paris to Strasbourg. Starts June 10.

Schedules are at www.voyages-sncf.com.

Hi Lynette,

Libourne is just outside Bordeaux.

>we are arriving at 2.30pm-

Oh dear,

From CDG2 the last train to Libourne is at 13:45

There is a 15:42 to Bordeaux that arrives at 20:00.

You could make the 17:15 from Paris Montparnasse arriving Libourne at 20:51.

Check train schedules for Roissy to Bordeaux, Libourne, Dijon and Auxerre at www.voyages-sncf.com.

Ditto from Paris.

It's not exactly a "small" town, but I believe it's a must-see if you're near Paris. Chartres is quaint, charming, and accessible. Plus it has one of the world's most interesting cathedrals. I highly recommend it.
Also - don't miss Versailles while you're in the area.
These two stops will rank high in your list of memories for this trip.
Bon voyage.

Hi LJ,

>if arriving in to orly west, which train station should i look at to train out of paris...

That changes things.

I had assumed that you would be at CDG.
Shame on me.

From ORY you have to go into Paris.

Look up schedules for "Paris" to Dijon, Bordeaux or Libourne. Sncf will tell you your departure station.

If you decide on Burgundy, you could take the train to Auxerre or Troyes and get a car there.
