My apologies in advance to all who feel these questions have been answered before; my 65 year old brain seems unable to grasp the concepts expressed.
I will be receiving one of these Nokia 5110 phones shortly. My phone need is as follows: 1) for emergencies only 2)a very few calls TO for lodging, restaurant, etc. 3) no expectation of receiving calls. 4)phone probably disposable after our trip thru Poland, Czech/Slovak R, Hungary, Austria.
Questions:
1.How do I know if the phone is locked?
2.Must I call mobal.com to activate service?
3.The per-minute charges are $1.25-$1.50, yet to other countries are from $2.95-$4.75. Is there a cheaper rate available? Does one buy a new SIM card to get it? Does one need a different card for each country? Is there no pan-European Union card/company/rate available?

SMS text messages are $0.80/message. Do all phone numbers display text messages? If so, could I text message people in other countries to call me back (since my incoming calls are $1.25-$1.75/minute), or might they not return the call since they would also have to pay to call me, an unknown person to them?

Tomboy,
For your limited needs, the free phone fom Mobal will serve. Mobal will give you your own phone number, and you will pay for calls depending on where you call to. From my limited knowledge, I believe Lawoman was talking about unlocking the phone to put her own chip in, which she can add prepaid time to, which would make her calls cheaper. But since you won't be using your phone that much - you should be OK using the phone as it comes from Mobal.
