By Rothenburg I assume you mean Rothenburg ob der Tauber. When Rhein-Main AFB was still operating - it was adjacent to the Frankfurt airport, I would find myself in Franfurt pretty often. From there I have daytripped to Rothenburg o.d.T. (bus trip) as well as Heidelburg, Weisbaden, Bad Hamburg a lots of other places. There will be plenty to keep you busy for your week. If possible, overnight in R o.d. T. It takes on a very different character after the day trippers leave.

In conjuction with Heidelberg, consider also visiting Bad Wimpfen which is only an hour from Heidelberg. It's a lovely little town that we fell in love with on our visit a couple of years ago.

The town of Büdingen, just a easy short drive north/east of Frankfurt, is nice little town for a great afternoon. www.buedingen-touristik.de

Fritzlar (further north of Frankfurt)is a great little town.. "Birth Place of the German Empire" www.fritzlar.de Fachwerk buildings, nice square... Thor's Oak.

Have you thought about driving over to Rüdesheim (west) and taking the lift up to the Neiderwald Monument...then take the lift down to Assmannshausen and the the boat back to Rüdesheim? http://www.seilbahn-ruedesheim.de/en...rundfahrt.html

You could also drive futher down the Rhein, driving up to the Loreley for a great veiw of the Rhein and then drive on to Braubach and tour Marksberg Castle www.braubach.de or cross the Rhein with your car on the ferry at St Goarshausen to St Goar and tour Rheinfels Castle www.st-goar.de

Bacharach is also a nice stop, tour the town and take the boat www.k-d.com to St Goar (very nice part of the Rhein) and then tour St Goar and take the local train back to Bacharach.

I like doing lots of things during a trip (boat, tram, train etc) even when I have a car... it just adds to my experience.

Like others said Heidelberg is a great day trip... so is Rotenburg ob der Tauber although staying the night in RodT is best so you can experience the town after most of the tour groups leave and do the Night Watchman's tour... one the best reasons to go there.

I also like Würsburg for a day trip www.wuerzburg.de and Michelstadt www.michelstadt.de

Hope this helps... enjoy Frankfurt... one of my favorite places...don't miss the Sachsenhausen district.

Mainhattengirl: Thank you so much for your information that you have been posting for me...I was wondering if you could give me a better idea/guideline for my trip. After reviewing of posts: Here is what I was looking into: Frankfurt will be my base,I will be renting a car, The first day upon arrival was going to stay close and explore Frankfurt, the opera house, the area of Sachsenhausesen perhaps the Main Tower, and of course a beer garden. The following days looking into day trips for : Heidelburg, Rothenburg, Wurzburg, Bad Hamburg Baden Baden, Mainz and the festive for Boppard on the Rhine River during the 10/3-10/5 week. Is this feasible and is one day in each of the towns/area too much or little...I was thinking of getting a GPS and loading in addresses...thank you so much for any input that you could assist me with.

One day is probably enough for most of the towns. The 3rd is a holiday and there is a Jazz festival at the Frankfurt Römer on that day. Here are a couple of other things going on in the Rhein Main area:

* 2-6 Oct. Bad Nauheim - Village Festival & Sunday Shopping

* 3 Oct. Frankfurt, Roemerburg - Jazz Festival to Celebrate German Reunification Day

* 3-4 Oct. Neu Ansbach, Hessen Park Open Air Museum - Apple and Harvest Festival

* 3-4 Oct. Ronneburg - Medieval Castle Festival

Do be aware that cars in Frankfurt are at a disadvantage and parking is a pain and expensive.

If you have a spare day, hop on the train to Strausburg,France or you could drive. It is right on the border and a delightful change from Frankfurt. The cathedral dominates the central square but don't limit your visit to that. Walk about 2 blocks away from the sqaure and you will find some wonderful restaurants, most tourist never see. A walk along the river is very pleasant and gives you an idea of life there.

Before your plan gets set in stone, look into visiting the Mosel River, and maybe Burg Eltz. It's only a little north of Boppard. We loved the Mosel; it's a sleepy river valley, lined with vineyards and supremely cute little towns. It was the highlight of our trip to Germany.

And Burg Eltz is just north of the Mosel, set scenically in woods. It is a very well-preserved castle (not a pile of stones) that has been lived in continuously since the Middle Ages.
