Franco - this board has been a bit slow but I thought maybe you could look at a few apartments and tell me what you think. First of all - you are an amazing wealth of knowledge!! Its incredible!!
So we are a family of 4 coming to Rome in December - our number one priority is location - especially since the weather may be cold and rainy we want a quick walk to a many destinations as possible (gotta keep the kids happy, warm, and dry.)

Well, that's easy to decide. In the light of what we've been thoroughly discussing on this thread about the Campo dei Fiori neighbourhood at night, the second of your three apartments wins hands down. It's also clearly the nicer neighbourhood, evening drunkards aside.

Marco Help I have an apt. on hold at the address Via Giuila 189, but I just read some reviews of the inn next door at 189A and many people said that you need earplugs to sleep there from noise. Is is becasue it is so close to the Lugotevere? It is just on the other side of the steps to go up to the Lugotevere and it is on a corner, 2nd floor. What do you think of that area? I have read the thread and everyone seems to love Via Giulia but maybe not this part?? Denise

Not sure where you found such reviews, but there is clearly no no. 189A in Via Giulia, just 189, then a side lane, then 190; and I don't see any inn around there. So I'd be proud and happy to have secured an apartment in Via Giulia.

Franco,
Namaste and Thanks!
What good karma you must be earning yourself with all your help! I used your responses to narrow down a few apartments in Trastevere. Would have been clueless otherwise where to stay in Rome. I am from India and this is my first time in Italy.
There will be 4 of us and in the ideal world I would like to get an apartment very close to but not in the middle of good restaurants, nighlife and nice buzz in the evening (but not overly noisy).
The shortlisted apartments are below. It will be great if you can give your rating for the top 2. Sorry for the multiple choices but it is not clear yet if all of them are available for my dates in May:

Maybe?:

I am waiting to hear back from another broker so please bear with me if I send out another post later on.

Ok, let's add to my good karma
Roman Reference 1266 and Inn Trastevere Balcony are in impossible locations, don't even think about them. Roman Reference 1534 is in a nice neighbourhood, but too far uphill for my taste; similar judgement for Domus Priora, though the problem is less marked here. The Sleep in Italy apartment is in a tranquil side lane in the lively part of Trastevere, so maybe exactly what you are looking for and will perhaps be your favourite. My favourite, locationwise (I'm not talking about furniture and decoration of the apartment - in this respect, I like the Sleep in Italy one much, much better), would be Natale del Grande without any doubt: just a few steps from the Trastevere market, which I love, and five or ten minutes by foot from the buzz of the Trastevere nightlife.

Just like life...no perfect choices. Thanks Franco for your pointers. Super helpful as always. I like the Sleep in Italy apartment much more than the Natale del Grande. Purely on asthetics. Obviously you know about location the best.
Would the SiI apt be a long walk from the Trastevere market? Apart from the proximity to the market is there anything else that make the Natale apt preferable? Is the neighbourhood nicer (shops, restaurants etc)? What about ease of travelling to other parts of Rome?

As I said, I'm entirely with you on the two apartments' aesthetics. And no, it's no long walk from the Sleep in Italy apartment to the market - 10 minutes maximum. The Natale del Grande surroundings are nicer as far as shops (thinking of groceries, above all, there are some of Rome's best there!), as far as restaurants, the choice is definitely better where the SiI apartment is located. As far as ease of traveling, both locations are good - SiI more conveniently located to the busses running along the banks of the Tiber, Natale del Grande more conveniently to the tram (see somewhere above). You'll need both of them.

As we've discussed often on this thread, there are no literally unsafe areas in central Rome. However, this one would not be my very first choice if I wanted to feel really comfortable.

Thanks Franco. I just realized there is a cost differnce as well between the 2. Seems from your thoughts, there is very little seperating the 2. I am leaning towards the SiL option but have left it to my wife and the other couple to decide.

Hi Franco, you seem to be the expert I am looking for right now! We are a 30+ couple with a 4 yr old going to Italy in Sept end for 14 days. For our 5 days in Rome (Oct 3-8), I am looking for an apartment to meet the following criteria:
1.Good location (we stayed for 5 days in Via Veneto last yr....loved the Ludovisi apartment that let us walk to Spanish steps etc....but would want a change this time)
2.Stroller friendly (my son uses it only when very tired sightseeing....so loft etc. not safety issues but the area should not be hilly)
3.Safe (though we won't be staying out very late as teh little boy sleeps early)
4. Not noisy....again light sleeper!
Have narrowed down on this and was wondering if you could give your opinion :

Thanks again!

Well, as you'll already have guessed from this thread, I consider this an absolutely perfect location! It's around the corner from the Trastevere market - I'm sure you'll love it.

Franco - I cannot begin to tell you how useful this string has been, for beginning to look at apartments in an unfamiliar city. I have many pages of "possibles" in the recommended areas; now to start narrowing them down! Thanks for the time and effort you've expended on this work in progress.
