Dear Francophones: Im having trouble pronouncing the following. Can someone please help. I need an EXPERT. Here we go:Chateau d'Yquem, La Tache, Grands Echezeaux, Chambertin Clos de Beze Vieilles Vignes....and also Loewe, Mainbocher...I know these are EXTREMELY HARD, but there are such scholars in here. Thanks, John G.

Okay, I will take a crack - - using standard rules of pronunciation - - with the disclaimer that sometimes place names or famil/trade names might follow exceptions to normal rules:

Chateau d'Yquem

Shah-TOE dee-KAHNH

(but the "N" is more "insinuated" than actual pronounced - - rhymes with the (first) syllable in "manger" or "blanc" or Jean Valjean.

La Tache - - lah TOSH - - rhymes with gosh or posh

Grands Echezeaux

Grahnh zesh-shuh-ZOE

(once again the "n" is more insinuated than actually pronounced - - same syllable as above)

Chambertin de Beze

Shahnh-bur-TAAHNH duh Bez

the first syllable here is like the ahnh above - - but the third syllable is more of the syllable a kid might make crying "WAAAAH" (with a "hint" of "man" or "tan" - - rhymes with the French words "vin" or "cinq" (sounds like "sank" - - but with most of the "n" removed).

Vieilles Vignes

Vee-aiyuh VEE-nyuh

where the "aiyuh" rhymes vaguely with "mayor" (but with no "R" of course).

Loewe -- I really don't know - - could maintain the German pronunciation - -

somewhere between Loo-vuh and Luh-vuh - - where Loo is like "look" not like "loon".

Mainbocher

Maahnh-boe-SHAY - - once again the first syllable rhymes with "vin", "cinq", et cetera.

though this one too, COULD revert to a German pronunciation

Mine-BOE-hkher

Best wishes,

Rex
