I just may be lucky (or not observant enough)but I haven't noticed this problem on my trips to France. After reading this thread, I'm sure I will!
However, about the Turkish toilets, while traveling around the French countryside I've been quite grateful for those little holes in the ground! I've learned to always be prepared. However, I can understand why those traveling with children could be a little dismayed with those facilities.

Our motto when we lived in France, "Never lean up against the wall in an elevator."
Major pee area...you can see and smell evidence..
We saw people peeing on walls in public all the time when we lived there. Disgusting. And those 100 degree days made it unbearable to breathe because of the stench.
However, nothing beats what we saw in Brooklyn a few years ago. A lady had a piece of cardboard in front of her while she was sort of in the bushes...NOT peeing. ICK.

The comment by DonnieD reminds me of the divorce case with revealing testimony by a handwriting expert.

Buzzy, was that you sitting in that truck parked on the small side street on Montmartre last week? I swear I didn't see you until it was too late, and it was the first time I ever did such a thing (well, since high school, anyway) and it truly was urgent.

If you think there's anything men can do that women can't, I humbly suggest that you Google "pee standing."

I'm a bit surprised that this thread hasn't been pulled as quickly as one about US women's toilets. But as a follow-up to that, I suggest that there are indeed women who pee standing, at least in the US, and especially in restrooms along interstates and in airport and train stations -- they just do it standing over a seat and leave it wet for the next user, who may not be able to "stand" in the same situation. Aren't we a charming species sometimes?
