Foot and Mouth Disease in Ireland
People I know were in the South of Ireland last week and said most castles and tourist places were closed due to the fear of the diease. I am planning a trip in May but am worried about things being open. Anyone else have any recent experiences? Concerns??
JR

there are several posts on thopic already. Just look down the list or search on foot and mouth. By may there probably won't be a problem anymore. The Prime Minister of Ireland today said theat if their are no cases in the next week (none so far in Ireland) then things would then start opening up again

JR,
For up to date information on what is happening check out www.ireland.travel.ie (the web site of the Tourist Board) that is where Milo got the list of what is open and you should also check out www.ireland.com (irish Times newspaper) and http://www.irlgov.ie/daff/default.htm - the webs site of the Irish Dept of Agriculture.

The real problem is that the Irish Government are afriad that due to lax procedures that F&M will spread into Ireland from the UK - they haven't closed down the UK and restricted access as much as they have in Ireland.Ireland is F&M free and wants to keep it that way but can't relax until the cases in the UK stop. So anyone visiting Ireland in the coming weeks will find themselves walking over disinfection mats. People are asked not to walk through the countryside (and farmers have signs up advising people they are restricting access to their land)

Hope this helps,

Cathy

Dear JR: Just returned from Northern Ireland 3/7 to 3/12. All national parks and castles are closed up there. Private tourist places (distillery tours, linen centers, golf courses, and pubs) are open for business. By May who knows, it may be worse because it hasn't yet spread into Ireland. There are disinfectant mats to walk over in the airport and most private tourist places; since dress is quite casual there it is not a big deal (I can't imagine trying to wear delicate shoes in any part of Ireland).

The countryside and coast are still beautiful, the pubs are still lively, and the people can be wonderful.

Just to clarify everything - places and attractions are open again in the Republic however it is not the case in the North where there have been several cases of F&M - if you plan to go to Northern ireland check with the Northern tourist board howevcer the Republic is open for business again and there are some very cheap deals going - see the home page of this site or check out www.cie.ie or www.ireland.travel.ie

Cathy
