For the folks in Europe:
Hurricane Frances is slowly approaching Florida with 140-mph winds. Several million people have been ordered to evacuate the state.
A hurricane warning has been issued on the east coast of Florida from Flagler Beach southward to Florida City.
The latest track for the huge storm has it making landfall at about noon Saturday near Vero Beach. It is then projected to head west/northwest toward Port Richey.

Thank you, Degas, for thinking of us. Can you believe our luck? Two hurricanes in a row?
Somebody around here must not be living right! Scarlett, Olive Oyl, Patrick, what have y'all been up to? My behavior has of course been beyond reproach, as always!
Degas, I want to phrase this as delicately as possible, but as you yourself have often made reference to your not inconsiderable girth, would you consider coming over to my place, honey, to hold me down when the wicked winds howl?
Should you require further inducement, I'll have my passport, credit cards, and Paris rental apartment lease duct taped to my body. Worse comes to worse, maybe Frances will at least blow us both clear to St-Germain!

Croque_Madame, with a super sweet offer like that, I'd risk running a few police roadblocks!
Seriously, I was in a Cat 4 storm years ago and NOBODY could stand up to those high winds.

Well, dang, Degas, there go my hopes for something to look forward to over the weekend!
Something, that is, other than taking the first twelve hour shift at one of the 10 shelters scheduled to open in our county (Alachua) at 5:00 PM tomorrow. As we county workers were all "volunteered" to work, I cannily elected to take the initial shift. The plan is to be in and out before the roads become impassable.
I'm not necessarily referring to fallen trees, it's all those out-of-gas cars loaded with south Florida refugees that'll be clogging the roads. Poor things, hundreds of thousands of them are already poking along in bumper to bumper traffic on the interstate headed north.
Bob, take care over there on Amelia Island!

Croque Madame, you must keep yourself safe if we are to meet in Paris!
Thanks for your concern, Degas. My mother in Naples phoned to say that her baby brother in Cocoa Beach has been evacuated...and he's heading straight to Naples! Let's hope this storm takes care of itself quickly, because Mama and her family under one roof spells trouble! (Someone might get fed to the alligators if he stays too long, if you catch my drift.)

Hey everyone,
We are here in Boca Raton battening down the hatches. Patio furniture is in the pool. Plants, trash cans, bbq in the garage. We are securing everything we can secure! We are more than 5 miles from the beach, so we have not been told to evacuate. Even the mall closed before lunchtime...you know things must be serious!
Thanks for you thoughts and prayers!

Hey, Wren,
If the wind blows you up to Delray Beach, please say hi to my mom. She's stocked her bathroom (her one interior room without windows) with food, water, flashlights, and even a chaise so she can lie down. So you can have a party, if you like peanut butter crackers and applesauce.

This one missed us by a fraction earlier this week, so I know how all you Floridian Fodorite's feel. Please stay safe and don't take any unnecessary risks. And, most of all, don't forget to take those European travel photos and good bottles of wine if you evacuate!
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you in the path of Frances. Please keep us posted.

I almost feel guilty deserting my newly adopted state during this time of trouble but we're safely tucked away in Minnesota for the month. I guess it was a good idea to return for a while after all even if it's been too cold for summer comfort here. But we worry about what we'll be returning to. Wren, hope we can preserve the beauty of the east coast to still be able to show it off to the Naples gatherees to a return party as we talked about. Best of luck to all of you down there. Take care and be safe.

<i>Merci Degas!
We are all tucked in here..done all we can to make ourselves safe in our house.
The nice man who got this house ready for us to move into, this past January! came today and nailed boards over a huge wall of windows that we were most worried about. He did not do more as there is no more wood available.
The Yankee and Pup and I thank you all for your good wishes. I hope we will all be posting our Hurricane adventures next week~
Croque Madame, I will be here waiting to hear all about your Paris meeting with dln, so take care of yourself!!
Bob, stay safe!

My first hurricane - boarded up one side of the house but my friend came by and told me to bring my family over to his house with hurricane shutters.
Got all the necessary supplies. Then I remembered my photo albums. On my last grocery store run figure a little wine wouldn't be a bad thing to weather out the storm.

THEY FINALLY GOT MY STREET CLEANED UP FROM CHARLEY and now his wicked stepsister is coming to call! And our tree man can't come till next week! So I think I'll take my computer and hide it under the bed..it won't be usable but it will be whole and safe if the old oak falls on the house!
I've spent the day making ice..none available here and generators are OOS everywhere...why oh why did I ever leave Texas!
