kimhe, if you're still reading this I have a Q about Getaria. Are you familiar with restaurant Kaia-Kaipe? A Spanish chef recommended it to us as a substitute for Elkano (very similar cooking style and products). I asked him for an out-of-the way place and he mentioned this one.
If we go here it will be instead of to Casa Urola though, which I know you really like ... any thoughts? We will be getting the full 'fresh off the boat' treatment at Ibai the next day so Kaia-Kaipe or Elkano might be redundant.

Kaia-Kaipe is excellent and competes with Elkano about the fame in Getaria. But the more modest places down in the small harbour are also plain fabulous. If you're in for the "fresh off the boat" treatment at Ibai the next day, it would be a very tough choice between Getaria or Urola in San Sebastián.
Getaria is something quite different in itself, and the "fresh off the boat" thing is very obvious here as you'll be more or less sitting next to the boat. But then again, Urola was voted #1 in treatment of vegetables in all of Guipúzcoa last year (not only San Sebastián) and that speaks volumes. Much because of chef Pablo Loureiro's outstanding grill skills.

Thanks again kimhe, your expertise is appreciated ... I admit part of wanting to go to Getaria is just to figure out the bus system, LOL.
Since the grilled whole turbot seems to be incredible in Getaria and Ibai's most famous fish plate is the sole we may just do both restaurants while turbot are in peak season. Probably going to return next fall or next year to do a couple of the three star places and we'll dine at Urola for sure then as my wife likes to mix up the long tasting menus with simpler places where she can order à la carte.

anamarie, thanks for the article. I hadn't seen it but loved reading it. That's the way to do it, burn off 4-5,000 calories on the bike each day and then eat at a great restaurant. <b>“You know why we do this?” Juan Carlos asked. “So we can eat and drink lots.”</b>
In two weeks we are dining at two of the places he mentioned (Mugaritz and Etxebarri) and maybe to a third, Elkano. But traveling by bus or train or taxi, LOL. Usually if we walk 2-3 hours/day and eat lightly the other 2 meals we come home without any weight gain, but this one will be challenging because we have 8 straight days of eating.

I love it ! This trip will be amazing. My husband and I are skipping the bike riding. That sounds like too much especially after having wine. We motorcycle though 
We will have to do a little jogging to keep off the weight of all of the eating in all of these fabulous restaurants. I am so thankful to have turned to Fodors..

Hi everyone! Back to planning! We are leaving soon...in a couple of weeks, the trip was pushed one week so had to change dinner reservations and airline reservations but luckily I was able to without a hitch!
I'm set with favorite restaurants that everyone on this thread has helped me with. I am still in need of a casual one in Barcelona for our arrival,(many are closed in August.) I tried booking Ca L Estevet and Carrer.. it looked good!(kimhe) and have had no luck.
Also am looking for something in Bilbao besides Azurmendi...we will be staying at the Miro and we need a dinner in Bilbao.
Any thoughts?

Tried to get into some restaurants like Gresca,Cinc Sentits Hisop and they are either closed or are not open on a Sunday. The day we arrive is a tough one.
In San Sebastian we are doing a pintxos tour that kimhe recommmended. We are also in need of another dinner place in Bilbao since we are eating at Azurmendi but staying for one extra day. Any thoughts Fodors? Thanks excited for our trip
