Florence, Tuscany, Portofino

We have a wedding in Davos, Switzerland on June 30th.

We are thinking about flying into Florence a week earlier and staying or visiting Florence, Tuscany / Portofino.

Is this doable? I am thinking Florence for 2 nights and Tuscany for 3.
Do you have any advice or suggestions?

I was going to make way up to Milan and fly into Zurich. Any guidance appreciated.

Wonderful scenic way Milan-Davos without flying - take train Milan-Tirano and then take fantastic Bernina Express - awesomely scenic train -up and over the Alps to St. Moritz and Chur - short train ride from Davos. Check www.sbb.ch; www.seat61.com; BETS-European Rail Experts and www.ricksteves.com for details. Break up journey in St Moritz area and savor the high Alps and not just fly over them.

Have you been to Tuscany before? With only 5 nights you might want to remain in Florence the entire time, perhaps with a daytrip or two. Portofino, in Liguria, is a big detour, too far for only 5 nights in total. For me, that time of year, I might stay on the coast in Liguria. Or in a rural Tuscan hotel with a pool, if you rent a car. Florence will be packed and hot.

Have you been to the Lakes in the north of Italy?

Portofinfo is one of Europe's biggest mobs scenes - in season negating any charm that old fishing village may once have had. Santa Margharita Ligure near it is a nice seaside town where fishing still in a major industry and nice base for going to Portofino nearby - nice hikes there or boats or buses. Could day trip from SML also to Cinque Terre.
