Florence to Venice is about 2 1/2 hours by train-- and well worth doing. There is no need to have a car in Florence or Venice, and the train is comfortable and easy. And if you've never been to Venice before, getting out at the train station and seeing the Grand Canal for the first time is truly a thrilling experience.

It's just at 3 hours on Eurostar and very inexpensive. Check out the schedules on www.raileurope.com
