Florence as base 4 nights or Tuscany 2 nights/Flor 2 nights

Should we stay in Tuscany or stay in Florence and take daytrips?

I would stay 2 nights in Florence while you are visiting that city and then move out to the Tuscan countryside where you won't have to deal with so much traffic. Towns like Greve, Castellina, Radda

I agree with Kam. After a while, the traffice/noise gets to you in Florence. And Tuscany is so beautiful. Changing to another hotel can be a pain sometimes, but you can really relax and enjoy the flavor of the area without being exhausted and driving back to the city.

We stayed in Siena one night and thoroughly enjoyed the change of pace...much quieter, lovely shops, etc. Have fun.

We're doing a split stay ourselves -- actually we'll have 2 nights near Tuscany/Umbria border, then later (in a 3-week trip) 2 nights in Florence and 2 more just West of Siena. My guess is on our next trip we'll won't do as much bouncing around, but we should have a better idea after this "sampler" type experience. We like cities. When I'm in a city, I like to stay put! We like to explore exquisite, scenic countryside. We like staying somewhere long enough to get an idea of what it would be like to live there. We're not going to get that with this trip, but there will be others. Re-reading this, the "we" sounds so imperial...I'm just talking about me and my darling husband of 25 years!

Agree with the 2/2 strategy. We're basing ourselves in Tuscany at La Cisterna in San Gimignano (quaint hotel right in the center of town-even reserved a room with a terrace so we can sip wine in the evening).

San G is a nightmare during the day, but great at night. Also, easy to do day trips from there as parking lot is right outside city walls. Our day trip plans include a tour of a few Chianti vineyards one day and touring Montepulciano (great reds) and Siena the other day. Although I love Siena's piazza for hanging out during the day, didn't love the town at night as much. Good luck.
