Hi Avaline. Have you ever considered staying at a pensione or albergo?? We stayed in an albergo in Roma and found it charming and very inexpensive, especially compared to "American Hotels". Check out Let's Go or Rick Steve's websites for good bargain finds.

Hi Avaline,
Having just looked for hotels in Venice, I can say that it will be hard to find a well-located, quaint, 3-star in Venice for less than $120, especially if you are not going in the low season. However, a great website for Venice hotels is:
http://www.veniceinfo.it/frameset.php3?language=inglese

Good luck!

I'll be staying at the Locanda Sturion, an 11-room 13th century hotel on the Grand Canal by the Rialto Bridge, in May, but I'll be visiting it briefly this month as well. I'll report back on how it is. I paid 340,000 lira, or $159 per night, for three nights in May. That includes breakfast, of course.
